I agree that one should look at the 70-year record of DKA in deciding on BMA funding for downtown development. When I arrived here 20 years ago, DKA was the prime mover in downtown affairs. Stores closed at 5 p.m. Customer service was indifferent. The few eateries were for the locals. Just a part of DKA’s 70-year work. Now, with the DBA here, and its driving members, there is life in downtown. New stores, new attitudes, better shopping hours. There are events that draw diverse crowds. Our citizens can enjoy nationally known artists in a safe and low-cost environment.
Yes, DKA’s 70 years of leadership should not be forgotten. As is said, those who don’t learn from the past will regret the mistakes of the past.

This might be the letter to the editor of the week. I hope it got a star in the paper.
Oh stop with the bashing of the battered DKA. Don't you realize that they will be orchestrating the annual Christmas tree lighting and gingerbread house competition in early December? I mean really, thats gotta be at least a ten-foot tall goliath, loaded with over a HUNDRED miniature xmas lights. Talk about attracting folks to the downtown area! As for the DBA and their trendy, successful restaurants and unique musical venues, who needs em!
Why do we have to have corporate welfare? IF we are "promoting" downtown we also give money to the chamber to do the same thing. We are paying extra taxes for them to promote them self. I say dont give it to anyone. Start working on tax breaks for citizens.
You make some very valid points. Was DKA just treading water for the past 30 years or so?
