KNOXVILLE — Tennessee safety Janzen Jackson was named the Southeastern Conference’s freshman of the week Monday.
The 6-foot, 180-pound Lake Charles, La., native had a season-high seven tackles during the Volunteers’ 31-13 win over then-No. 21 South Carolina this past weekend. He also forced a fumble on the third play from scrimmage and broke up two passes against the Gamecocks.
Jackson has started seven of eight games this season. He is the leading freshman and stands sixth on the team with 33 tackles. He’s tied for third in special teams tackles with five.
The Vols (4-4) host Memphis for homecoming Saturday.
ALL-SEC HOOPS: Tennessee senior forward Tyler Smith was one of six unanimous selections to the Southeastern Conference’s preseason men’s basketball first team.
Smith was also named to the media’s All-SEC first team.
The native of Pulaski, Tenn., enters the 2009-10 season ranked 39th in school history with 1,079 points.
Senior forward Wayne Chism was named to the All-SEC second team, which was voted on by the league’s coaches. A native of Jackson, Tenn., Chism ranks 36th with 1,141 points.
EXTRA POINTS: Tennessee’s Nov. 14 football game at Mississippi was set for a noon kickoff on CBS. The Vols lead the series against the Rebels 43-18-1 with wins in the past 12 games. Tennessee is 3-0 all-time in Oxford.
