MOUNT CARMEL — Seven people were arrested early Sunday morning after they allegedly barged their way into a Mount Carmel residence and started beating the occupants with pipes and beer bottles.
All seven are facing serious charges including one count each of especially aggravated burglary and three counts each of aggravated assault. The incident remains under investigation, and other charges may be pending.
The incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at 636 Cherokee St. in Mount Carmel.
Larry Hicks, 48, who owns the house, told police he was awakened by a knock on his door. Hicks said he answered the door and found a woman with whom he is acquainted.
“She was intoxicated and walked in uninvited, and the others just barged in right behind her,” Mount Carmel Police Department Officer Ken Lunsford said. “He (Hicks) never invited them in, but he knows some of these people by name. They went into a bedroom where this other guy who is staying there was asleep and started beating him.
“He (the houseguest) told me they woke him up beating him, and he was seeing stars, getting hit in the head.”
The suspects allegedly demanded a black leather jacket from the houseguest, Richard Taylor, 54. The suspects claimed the jacket had been stolen, but Lunsford said no black leather jacket has surfaced throughout the investigation.
Hicks said his son, Levi Hicks, 19, was awakened, and when father and son attempted to defend Taylor, a brawl ensued inside the residence.
All three victims suffered cuts and bruises as the alleged intruders attacked them using beer bottles, a metal pipe and a ceramic vase.
“They accused him (Taylor) of stealing the jacket, and they came there to get it,” Lunsford said. “During the fight they stole some pills — 60 each of Roxicodone and Xanax which Mr. Taylor had a valid prescription for, and then they left. One of the intruders lost his glasses, which we recovered inside the residence, and afterward in the jail he identified them as his glasses.”
As the intruders were leaving, they allegedly broke the windshield to Taylor’s truck and threw a cinder block through the driver’s side window.
Police issued a BOLO (be on the lookout) for the vehicle that the seven intruders had arrived in, a 1994 Chevrolet Blazer, and a short time later the vehicle was stopped by Kingsport police near Chadwick Apartments with all seven suspects inside.
“The victims got their licks in too, because when they got stopped in Kingsport some of them had bloody noses and injuries of their own,” Lunsford said.
Those charged were:
• Donna Ruth Sampson, 43, 1000 Stonegate Drive, Apt. D-7, Kingsport.
• Charles William Guy, 40, 1000 Stonegate Drive, Apt. S-10, Kingsport.
• Joshua Adam Dawson, 24, 609 Myrtle St., Kingsport.
• Tony Ray Wiles, 54, Chadwick Apartments, No. 3, Kingsport.
• Scottie Ray Barnette, 29, 258 Sue St., Gate City.
• Charlotte Michelle Stapleton, 33, 126 E. Winola Ave., Kingsport.
• Barbara Kay Begley, 34, 1005 Derwood Court, Apt. 2, Kingsport.
All seven remained lodged in the Hawkins County Jail Monday on $50,000 bond with arraignment set in Hawkins County Sessions Court on Nov. 9.

I live on Robertson Street. My family has lived next door to where I am now living for almost 70 years (they were there before the apartments). There are some really nice, good, God-fearing people living on this street. For those who don't know, Robertson St is the road leading to the Cloud Apartments. The law-abiding residents of this area are CONSTANTLY fighting the drug dealers in this area. All of the people in Cloud are not drug-dealing thugs or people leeching off "The System". Some of these people are good people who simple do not know how (or can't) get out of the situation to which they were born or have landed.
The problem is - the KPD SAYS they support us, but then when they are on patrol and they see someone doing something illegal (like walking in front of their car in the middle of the street with an open beer bottle), they keep on going. My neighbors fight (drunk and from what they tell people, high on pills gained illegally) so loud I can hear them inside my house with the heat pump running. No one in that house ever goes to jail for public intoxication or anything else.
My point in telling you all this is: these folks have done things that are illegal BEFORE this night of beating this man up. I guarantee it. But, the KPD doesn't want to do anything until someone is in the hospital.
BTW, they keep having meetings for the area, but they don't have them IN the area. They are over at Carver. Don't they understand some of these folks can't get that far at 8pm? The whole situation makes me sick.
Glad to hear from you Shawn - You call it like you see it, that's good. Glad you have your life together, you have made everyone at home proud. Thank you for serving your country. I am sorry you have to endure all this crap. I really hope Donna and Tony get their acts straight after this. It may be what it takes, and I hope that is the case. I look forward to seeing you in December!
hey donna ruth sampson is my mother and i agree that model city and cloud and such other places are garbage places to live. i will also say that if my mother were not hanging around some of the trash people she wouldnt had even had the idea to act this way. and i know my mother very well and i know she beat on this guy but i also dont believe that they stole his prescriptions cause every one my mother associates with is either on drugs or sales drugs this guy prob sold all of his pills and blamed her and her freinds with it so he could keep making money the illeagle way with no repprocussions. i know that she is looking at serious time which she deserves but maybe jail and or prison will teach her a few things and get her off of all the drugs maybe she will grow up. i was in alot of the same mess before except the jail part because i was smarter than doing stupid pointless crap while i was high. then i joined the army and got out of all the mess and im currently in washington state away from all the drama but if i were there she would not had been so impressionable to go out and beat on people i love home and i will be there in december hope to see some familiar faces ill be visiting my mom in jail. i love my mother and nothing she does will ever make that go away. but she deserves what she got and i would appreciate it if some people stopped posting garbage about stupid mistake people make cause if people learn from their mistakes they come out to better themselves right? thank you all for reading this post. bye. Shawn Sampson
Bud Ice and Jim Beam shots before going to work to "protect our country." Wonder what job that would be!!
Have a BDang fun time in the "trailer" down by the river.
My thoughts exactly Ms. Fleishour.
I'm thinking that they were not as interested in getting the jacket back as getting back what was IN the jacket.
News flash Ms. Dang - no black jacket was found!
BTW - In case you don't know, American Champagne is far better than French Champagne (in my opinion).
Melinda: He/She/It doesn't even have to go back to school.
BDang- Type out your response in Word, pay attention to those red squiggly lines under those long multi-syllable words, (that means the word is likely misspelled) correct them, and copy/paste into this forum.
Ta DAA! It's almost like gaining a few IQ points in your posts.
The More You Know...
B Dang, how about using some of the 100k a year income you say you have, go back to school and learn to spell correctly. Everyone I know who makes that much a year sure knows how to spell. I never knew that drugs could bring in such an income.
Sense.... you make none. Your wildly inaccurate "putdowns" are just miles off the mark.
Keep it up. You're amusing.
B Dang, I did say that there are far worse places than these. I was in no way trying to compare it to bigger cities, I was just trying to get the point across that a lot, NOT ALL, but a lot of the people who live there are bad news, regardless of what happened in this story.
What?!? You didn't get the obvious "Prince of Bel Air" reference?
What an uncultured barbarian.
LOL!
Simply wow. From the po' house ghetto to the penthouse, all in a short lifetime?
Color me impressed. So- your story goes something like this...?
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say this cab is rawkin'
But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Hawkins'
I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked at my kingdom
I just had to crow...
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Hawkins Co.
"GET your facts stright......"
My facts are straight dear. I have lived in several government housing places in Kingsport and I know how most, NOT ALL, people who live in those places are. You have to watch everything all the time or it will get destroyed or stolen. There are drugs running in and out constantly. It is not a good feeling not to feel safe in your own home. You should go sit in the parking lots one day and see what goes on, but you should lock your doors. There are far worse places out there, but these addresses are places that most people avoid for good reason.
gosh i am down in the dumps now that you showed us how well off you are. i was riding high on that trailer park comment but you really shot me down by proving how much you make. i'm sure you don't live in a trailer now, in fact you were probably in the running to buy steve grindstaff's house before it burned down. but i'm sure your current house is huge and you have piles of money that you sleep on. i thank you for keeping us poor people in your thoughts. i wonder what champagne tastes like, i've always been too poor to afford it. must be nice.
BG: You're not married to Robyn from the halloween thread are you? You both seem like you have something to prove, which over the internet- is laughable.
* you're
All I know is that if you need six friends to help you take care of your problem your a coward.
what does "high scale" mean, the trailers are off the wheels?
BG: "Carma" may be a burden, but Libel is a legal issue. You're smart to keep that lady's info to yourself.
Oh... and don't lecture me about "intelligence" since I used the term Po-po. Somewhere, an English teacher is weeping quietly over your butchered grammar, spelling, sentence fragments, and run-on sentences.
The police will charge those who need to be charged. Could it be that there isn't enough evidence to tack onto her to warrant an arrest? Can you say "hearsay"?
And back to an earlier point... All this, over a black leather jacket? Pathetic.
first off hilljack he highlighted INVASION OF PRIVACY in the user agreement. in other words, you're not supposed to be advertising someone's home address, telephone number, etc. which is what you're threatening to do. why in the world would you post her information? what does that do? are we supposed to go make a citizens arrest? i love when people get on here and say things like "if you knew what i knew" and "there's more to this but i can't say". and i really can't imagine there is someone else involved and the other 7 haven't invited them to the party. you seem to know this guy pretty well, and from the looks of it he's only associated with trash. so i'm starting to wonder why you keep reminding us you know him...
the mug shots were great.to answer jescos beer quiz ,i would have to say at least 2 to 3 loritabs a piece,,mmm mabye a 12pk of nattie ice in the can a coulpe of zannys,,mmmm,,and then all these great minds in the same place!mabye they were born in hawkins county!
Roxicet, Xanax. I know lots of drug dealers with valid prescriptions. There's more to this.

In other words... knock yourself out, but be prepared to be banned. How about letting the Po-po deal with it instead of getting all vigilante on us?
"Where will these poor people go?" Maybe they will go to work like the rest of us.
HA! That is good stuff. I have to agree with your entire comment. It is funny how people can't afford to pay their rent (so they get the government to pay it), yet they still have enough spare change to buy drugs and ALCOHOL, and then still act like everyone owes them more. You can just read these people's addresses and know what is going on.
It sounds like a serious case of Whiskey Tango to me.
I'm honestly surprised that a firearm wasn't introduced to this little soiree, and several of the mouth-breathers expunged from Life.
A home-invasion and an arse-whuppin'... all over a black leather jacket? Really?!?
The PBR musta been flowing hard at the bar that night. Sheesh.
No it was the Hicks guy that was shot at.
If the city of Kingsport would burn down the Model City appartments and a few other trash places, maybe there would not be as much of this kind of stuff in the paper. These are cesspools of crime and such and taxpayers carry the load. I know there will be many who wil chide me over this saying, "Where will these poor people go?" Maybe they will go to work like the rest of us. There was not anyone around more poorer than we were growing up. It was hard work and sacrifice that allowed us to do better. I would not allow a rat to live in any of these drug infested appartment systems in the city of Kingsport.
Well, when you sell drugs or house someone who sells drugs this kind of thing may happen to you.
how much nattie ice does it take to convince six of your friends to help you get your leather jacket back?
That's the same guy who was shot at in August. He needs new friends!
