Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey says he's unsure of Obama's citizenship

Published February 3rd, 2010 | 44 Comments

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- State Senate speaker and gubernatorial candidate Ron Ramsey said Tuesday he doesn't know whether President Barack Obama is a U.S. citizen, but that it's not an issue that voters care about.

Ramsey was asked after a speech to a Republican group about his views on the president's citizenship by Maclin Davis, a former state lawmaker and attorney for the state GOP.

"I don't know whether President Obama is a citizen of the United States or not," Ramsey responded. "I don't know what the whole deal is there.

"But I'm going to tell you something. When you walk out on the street down here, people don't really care about this issue."

Focusing on issues like the president's citizenship distracts from the Republican message on jobs, education and fiscal conservatism, Ramsey said.

"When we get off on sidelines like that, that's when people say 'aw,' they close their ears and don't listen," Ramsey said. "I'm not saying you're not right, Mac, I'm not saying you're not right - but that's not how you win elections."

State Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester was quick to denounce Ramsey's comments.

"Ramsey would rather pander to a far-right wing group of conspiracy theorists than govern in a pragmatic approach that most Tennesseans expect from their political leaders," Forrester said in a release. "Why in the world would Mr. Ramsey even entertain such a ludicrous idea when our state is facing tough times?"

Ramsey's main opponents in the GOP primary include U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga, Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Memphis prosecutor Bill Gibbons.

"Republicans should focus on questioning President Obama's policies on health care and the economy rather than his place of birth," said Gibbons spokeswoman Bonny Kinney. "Reliable nonpartisan organizations have shown corroborating reports of the president's birthplace - Hawaii. We consider the matter settled."

Wamp and Haslam could not be reached for comment.

Theories that Obama was born abroad abounded during the presidential campaign, even after an official Hawaii birth certificate was produced, along with August 1961 birth notices from two Honolulu newspapers. Numerous lawsuits and emergency appeals were lodged challenging Obama's eligibility to be president, and all were rebuffed by the courts.

The Constitution states that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency. The so-called "birthers" contend that Obama's Hawaiian birth certificate is a fake, and say he was actually born in Kenya, his father's homeland.

"To me that's absolutely asinine for that to be coming from a leader of our state," said state Rep. Joe Towns, D-Memphis and a member of the Tennessee Black Caucus. "It's playing into the bitterness and ignorance that still persists because this man won an election fair and square."

Davis, the attorney who raised the question after Ramsey's speech, suggested that a lawsuit should be filed to force Obama to pay back the salary he has earned as president.

Even before responding to Davis, Ramsey acknowledged that he could be causing some unease among his political staff.

"I've got a table full of advisers sitting over there, and they'll probably start cringing right about now when I start talking about some of this stuff," he said.

I must have missed something in the article. I didn't see anything "asinine" about what he said. Nobody knows whether the teleprompter in chief was legally qualified to be POTUS as he has all his records sealed and a team of lawyers to keep them sealed to the tune of close to $2 million spent thus far.

What we DO know is that the man was incredibly unqualified for the office, but people got caught up in the dream of a black man as POTUS and elected him anyway, completely ignoring all the warning signs. Now we are all paying the price of such fallacy.

"Nucular" "Corpses". Where's that change in these 57 states? LOL

"You'd rather have Sarah Palin or McCain or Mitt Romney or anyone who's nice and white to be your president."

It always falls back to the black/white issue, doesn't it? I could not care less about the color of the man's skin. It's his empty promises and politics-as-usual stand that I abhor.

I quietly held hope that he would be like the liberals of old- the ones with a solid antiwar sentiment. He was more than happy to accept the hollow accolades of the Nobel Peace prize, as he was ramping up troop levels in the Graveyard of Empires.

He has allocated nearly a trillion dollars to our already-swelling military- to the point where we are spending more "defensively" than the rest of the world, combined.

The American Empire and the Federal Government swells as the coffers of the citizens shrink. Promises of an open-door government and CSpan coverage of meetings fall by the wayside, as back-room legislation continues to happen.

George Bush was a nice white man. I abhor what he did to the size of our government, in the name of security and against "terrism". He incited fear in order to grow government's power.

Obama has played that exact same card many times in his first year. Collapse of *insert your beneficiary here* if we don't act today!

Again- I care not one iota about the amount of melanin his skin contains. His presidency is essentially Bush III, as far as liberty-minded, non-interventionist, smaller-government types such as myself are concerned.

And no... Palin, McCain, and Romney are more of the same ilk: more war, bigger military, and more intrusive federal gov't. Palin talks a big talk, but I suspect she's an empty suit, as well.

Well Oliver and Eric,
I sincerely thought the two of you had the brains to be able to google and find it for yourselves but hey if you need someone to hand it to you

http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/

plenty of artwork there. Just because I didn't post a link and you don't know how to google doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

"...posting pictures depicting him as the Messiah"

The most fascinating tidbit here is that the nut-wingers appear to not realize their own formulated propaganda.

Post the links to the pics of the "Messiah", Lady. Ah, but I guess by now they all must be gone, eh?

CommentEric Taylor | 2/7/2010 - 10:05 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

When Obama was first elected people were posting pictures depicting him as the Messiah and singing songs in his praise. I have seen them and heard them. So...NO its not just the right wing nut jobs doing it. Obama has not made a single comment to stop people from calling or thinking he is the messiah so by tolerating it he is accepting it in my opnion.

Can't wait for 2012 to get here becasue it can't come soon enough.

"One has only to look at how he has accepted praise as "The ONE, The Messiah, and other names that apply ONLY TO GOD to see there is a problem but if we oppose that, it HAS to be because of his race right?"

I only see conservatives calling him that sarcastically. Never once have I seen a democrat or liberal call Obama the "Messiah" or the "ONE". He hasn't accepted praise for it because it has never happened. It's complete nonsense.

Oliver Douglas: Again, if anyone doubts the misogyny of the commenter here, all one needs to do is visit that web site about shattered men. It's repulsive and disgusting and speaks for itself. Further research provides even more telling information.

Just because we want men to have the SAME protection under the LAW we hate women????

Just because we want men to have the same health care given to women, we hate women?

Also, just like the typical gender feminist, you are attempting to make it impossible for anyone to show you that you are wrong. If I show where we have helped women, you will simply call it "self serving."

A WOMAN posted this:

I am proud to call Ken a friend, and though we've not known each other long, I have found him to be a most warm and loving person. He first wrote asking if he could do anything to help in the fight to get justice for men, then within a short space of time he'd founded a wonderful online support group for men. It was no surprise to me, and an indication of Ken's integrity and love of people that, though his Support group was for Christian Men, he asked me, a woman to join. Not only that, but I'm also Jewish, but Ken's loving kindness knows no bounds. He works tirelessly to help anyone who comes his way, and fights fearlessly anyone who would cross swords with him in his quest to seek justice for all human beings.

Since when is wanting TRUE equality an indication that we hate women?

Oliver Douglas: For those who "want their country back" it is clear what you want - an old rich white man back in power. You can rest assured that most people will deny this and yell that it isn't about race, but in their hearts they KNOW it's first and foremost about race.

Why it is that it is the liberals who are always bringing up the race card? Also FYI, there are several really Black people I would vote for easily but NOT this one. One has only to look at this one's Chicago connections to see a major problem Also FYI this president is half Black so he could just as easily said he was White. It does not matter to me but it sure seems the liberals including you have to make an issue about it. One has only to look at how he has accepted praise as "The ONE, The Messiah, and other names that apply ONLY TO GOD to see there is a problem but if we oppose that, it HAS to be because of his race right?

Oh the subject of this news article is not relevant for today is it? Suppose you had a car worth $50,000 and someone forged the title to it and titled it under his name. Since he could show everyone a title, it is not relevant that it is an illegal title is it...it is STILL HIS car

It has been proven that a certificate of live birth can be obtained by people NOT born in Hawaii. There are dozens upon dozens of red flags which you choose to ignore simply because he promised you M O N E Y. (it is coming from YOUR wallet). No taxes on the lower income people? How about higher gas and electric bills, higher bank charges for the increase taxes they banks have to pay and the "fees" that are being introduced to avoid calling them taxes. This is of no concern to you?

FYI I have no more trust in either major party. They both are corrupt. Both are working hard toward a one world government but we do know that is coming anyway....but it will not be a blessing...it will be a curse.

Just in case you missed it, my reply to Nunya Bidness I said in part:

If you do not like something or someone....ridicule them. This is after all the progressive way so just keep your head buried in the sand and pretend everything is OK but remember, when you have your head in the sand, another part of your body is sticking out and is very vulnerable.

Also it is odd that I have been called both a misogynist and a misandrist so I must be good since it is hard to be both at the same time. The fact that I am a family activist does not matter. If I say anything positive about men, I am a misogynist. If I say anything positive about women, I am a misandrist.

Odd for not liking women, we have helped many of them. You see, unlike women's shelter who will often not even tell a battered man where he can get help (he sure will not get it from them) we help women on an equal bases although we do focus on men. BUT because we do help men...we have to be a misogynist. If you do not like something or someone....ridicule them. Anytime a man states that men are hurting too...it can ONLY be because they do not like women. I am not buying your straw man arguments about every program in the US...I am talking only about entitlement programs such as the Violence Against WOMEN Act which does not provide ONE DIME to help men although unbiased research shows men are abused as often as are women and that women are as violent or more so then men. And YES I can back it up by facts but why bother getting them as your mind has already been made up.

Other facts I could give you is that men's health care has a huge gap in it. Although almost as many men die from prostate cancer, it gets a fraction of the funding that breast cancer gets. Even the NIH states there never was a health care gap that caused women to be disadvantaged.
As I said, we have many women who have gotten help from Shattered Men including one in this area who is my "adopted daughter" I have also driven hundreds of miles to help women on several occasions never expecting anything in return but if this makes me a misogynist so be it.

So my friend...IF caring about MEN TOO....makes me a misogynist than call me it all you want. Bring in my sexual views although I have posted here in Time News that any sexual gratification apart from one's own husband or wife is sin, than go for that too. I have had far worse said and done.

CommentLady Liberty | 2/4/2010 - 8:37 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

The biggest thing is this this......it sets a very dangerous precedent. It opens the door for Arnold Schwarzenegger and any other foreign born human to run for President of the USA.

If we disregard this part of the Constitution it sets up other parts to be disregarded at whatever whim is necessary. So now our Constitution is meaningless to our lawmakers because if we don't uphold one part of it why uphold the rest.

We are a nation of laws for a reason. We are still the greatest nation in this country at the moment as to our freedoms and laws and our right to pursue happiness. If we continue to allow parts of our Constitution and Bill of Rights to be removed for whatever reason suits the current administration or future administrations then free speech and the right to bear arms will be the first things to disappear.

Because Obama was allowed to run without being properly vetted it means others can and will do the same. Why is he still hiding his birth certificate AND naturalization papers? School Records? How does a poor boy get funding to travel and go to a presigious college without backing? Who paid his way? We as Citizens of the US have a right to know all of this. If McCain had to show his life story why didn't Obama? If everything is on the up and up why not just show them to the people who hired you? We have a right to know.

CommentLady Liberty | 2/4/2010 - 8:35 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

"That Obama was born in Kenya, according to his own family, is no longer relevant"

Why wouldn't it be relevant? If he was not a US citizen, it would be illegal for him to be president and thus everything he signed would be null and void.

John McCain was vetted...he had to prove he was a natural born citizen because he was born in the Canal Zone yet the president has spent well over a million dollars to avoid showing a real birth certificate (Both of McCain's parents were US citizens while Obama's father was not a US citizen so it would have seemed more imporatnt to vet him)

There are many reports on this at:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=98546

including the ones below

Michelle contradicts Obama nativity story
Divulges Ann Dunham was 'very young and very single' at birth of U.S. president

Obama law tab up to $1.7 million
'Grass-roots army' contributions used to crush eligibility lawsuits?

More important is what is he doing as president?

He has broken almost every promise he has made including taxing the average person more and if he does get health care and the carbon tax, we have not seen anything yet. Oh he says he is taxing the big banks and things but it will be passed down to us.

He has given Miranda Rights for Terrorists but many of our own citizens can be accused of crimes and see everything they have worked for vanish without any due process of law

http://shatterdmen.com/Miranda.htm

and he claims there is a "budget freeze" but he is going to give billions more to gender feminist entilement programs that are designed to destroy families.

Obama intends to abscond with billions in taxpayer money in order to reward favored political constituencies. That means the teachers’ unions will make out like a bandit in hopes of burnishing the sagging No Child Left Behind program.

Obama is also proposing to increase funding for nine womens’ programs – but not a red cent for male-specific projects. If the president really wants to go after ineffective and wasteful programs, he should trim the millions going to abuse shelters, which the federal Office of Management and Budget has declared to be “Not Performing: Results not Demonstrated.”

(This is not the first time men have been sucker-punched by the Obama administration. Despite the fact that four out of five persons forced from their jobs by the current recession are male, Obama jimmied the economic stimulus programs so women would benefit disproportionately: www.renewamerica.us/columns/roberts/090723)

Polly,
You are incorrect. My parents were stationed in Asia for 2 years and that was where my sister was born. My father stated that she was automatically an American citizen just because he and mom were both natural born citizen of the USA. When she turned 18 she was sent naturalization papers stating she had to choose what nationality she intended to decalre herself.

Now if my sister had to fill these out so would Obama because we are the same age as him. If Obama was born in Kenya he has to have naturalization papers because my sister does. Just because my parents were both american citizens did not automatically make my sister one.

I am sick and tired of people thinking just because your parents are American it automatically makes you one if you are born in a foreign country. This is one reason so many foreigners come to America have their children here and then fly home. Being BORN in America makes you an automatic American citizen.

CommentLady Liberty | 2/3/2010 - 10:19 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Jeremiah,

Even if Obama was born in Kenya, which he wasn't, he would still be a natural born United States citizen. He would inherit his mother's citizenship. That is the same as if an American family was on vacation in the United Kingdom and had a baby while they were abroad. Their child would still be a natural born citizen and, therefore, eligible for the presidency. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone to United States Citizens. He is just as much a citizen of this nation as me who was born at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport. It is time people learn the United States Constitution and stop reading only the areas that they think help their position.

This news article reports that ‘The Constitution states that a person must be a "natural-born citizen" to be eligible for the presidency.’ Being a “natural-born citizen” has as much, if not more to do with the citizenship/residence of ones parents. The definition of “natural-born citizen” has been debated since the beginning of the U.S. constitution. There is no definitive answer, so then how would we expect Mr. Ramsey to be absolutely sure of the matter? Did you know that John McCain was born in Panama? Did you know that there have been questions about Mr. McCain’s eligibility to run for and serve as president?

I’m proud to live as one of the so-called “ignorant” people of East Tennessee. If you have time to call names, please take the time to research the facts. These facts can be found by reading the constitution, the 14th amendment, and the numerous court documents regarding the citizenship requirements that should be met to hold the office of U.S. President.

And this issue should have been completely resolved, with the help of a fully functioning news media, before appointing a person as commander in chief. The issues Mr. Hilton brings up about military orders are extremely important. We either need to follow our own laws or change them. Leave the partisan politics aside.

Seems to me that it was Davis who posed the question, and Ramsey suggested he didn't know what the deal was w/ Obama's citizenship, but that we had more important things to worry about. "Focusing on issues like the president's citizenship distracts from the Republican message on jobs, education and fiscal conservatism", Ramsey said. Maybe he was just being polite to the questioner?

I personally am concerned about the citizenship issue, not because it's Obama as much as what it signifies as far as the deception that was propagated throughout the campaign, the media bias toward Obama, and lack of desire to know the real truth.

I cant imagine the Lt. Gov. of the State of Tn. making assanine statements like this about the President Of the United States.

This will turn into a can of worms for Ron Ramsey and will be used against him at every corner he turns and it serves him right.

I've known all along that Ramsey is not leadership material for Governor of our state. He talks a big game but doesn't have the mentality to back up his theories.

Common sense tells all of us Obama is a natural born citizen regardless of what the media or any political leaders might suggest.

How dare you Ramsey to question the citizenship of the "The One" holding the highest office in our land.

Shame on you Ramsey--Shame on you !!!!

Thankfully there are more citizens in Middle and West Tennessee that will out vote the ignorance of our area.

"Maclin Davis, a former state lawmaker and attorney for the state GOP."

It's sad that someone who appears intelligent on paper disproves that notion the moment they open their mouth...as if they choose to be ignorant.

I really wish these guys would grow up! The article does seem to validate that he thinks there are more important issues, but come on! Why is this still the topic of conversation? Is it to keep that hate & anxiety brewing in our country for party interest? Don't we have enough of that without flaming the fire?

CommentMomma Mia | 2/3/2010 - 8:33 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

...and some people actually want this guy as our governor?
