MOUNTAIN CITY — The District 1-AA volleyball tournament was contested about as far East and North as you can get in Tennessee.
Sullivan East, riding the consistent play of senior Kara Anderson, fought off pesky Sullivan North and claimed the championship on Thursday with a hard-fought victory, 25-13, 23-25, 25-10, 25-20.
Both the Lady Patriots (26-18) and Lady Raiders (19-10) earned berths in next Tuesday’s Region 1-AA semifinals to be held at the District 2 champion.
Anderson, the Three Rivers Conference player of the year and District 1 tournament MVP, had 17 kills and 12 digs. And the Lady Pats needed each and everyone of them.
After cruising to a win in the opening game of the match, East found itself in a battle in Game 2.
The determined Lady Raiders got on top 2-0 and stayed on even terms with the Lady Patriots the whole way.
Trailing 22-21, North went on a 4-0 run to close out the game and even the match.
The outcome startled East.
