KNOXVILLE -- A volunteer fire department in Anderson County says due to a lack of funds, it will be converting to a subscription-based operation starting next year.
The Andersonville Volunteer Fire Department serves 9,000 residents in a 68-square-mile area that is about 20 miles northwest of Knoxville, close to the Norris Dam State Park.
Fire Chief Jeff Bagwell told The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/VZMgWT ) that a financial analysis showed that if the department didn't change its operating plan, it would have to shut its doors in three years.
Memberships are voluntary and will be based on the size of the residence or business. But after March 1, the department will charge nonmembers for responding to the scene of a fire or for emergency medical calls.
