WISE — The Wise County Grand Jury on Wednesday indicted the mother of a slain 2-year-old girl, and the mother's boyfriend, on murder and other charges in connection with the girl's death.
Emma Marie Baldwin was transported to the University of Tennessee's medical center in Knoxville Oct. 19 and later died. Wise County Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Adrian Collins said the girl's mother, Brandie Baldwin, 29, and Juwan Moore, 30, were being transported by mid-Wednesday afternoon to the Wise County Courthouse for an arraignment hearing before Circuit Judge Chadwick Dotson.
Collins said the grand jury indicted Moore on one count of capital murder and two counts of felony child abuse. Capital murder is punishable by death in Virginia.
Collins said Brandie Baldwin was indicted on one count of felony murder, carrying a maximum 40-year prison sentence; one count of felony child neglect with serious injuries carrying a maximum 10-year prison sentence; and two counts of felony child neglect, each carrying a maximum 5-year prison sentence.
Emma Marie Baldwin was initially taken from the Pole Bridge Road residence of Baldwin and Moore to Norton Community Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Knoxville, where she later died.
Brandie Baldwin and Juwan Moore were taken into custody in Tennessee upon the request of authorities in Virginia for probation violation and other charges unrelated to Emma Marie's death, and both waived extradition and were returned to Virginia..
