BRISTOL, Va. — Johnny Wood, morning anchor at WCYB-TV5, delivered his final Fishing Report during his Thursday morning broadcast.
“Wow!” Wood reflected aloud on the air. “It’s hard to believe that this is my final Fishing Report.”
His final report consisted of his commentary on a series of fishing photos sent to him by loyal fans, including a muskie caught by Kingsport’s Wayne Mullins.
Wood added the popular weekly reports to his Thursday morning broadcasts in the winter of 1979. During his tenure with the Tri-Cities' NBC affiliate, Wood posted some of the highest ratings of anly local show in broadcasting history.
The iconic local newsman says farewell at noon today in a special final broadcast at the Paramount Center for the Arts. A packed house of fans and well-wishers is expected to turn out for the live show.
