Sullivan County mugshot from Anthony Michael Adinolfi's arrest in 2011.
KINGSPORT — A former Kingsport pastor has been sentenced to approximately one year in jail for his sexually explicit texts and phone calls to a 16-year-old girl.
He must also register as a sex offender for the incidents, which occurred while he served as pastor of a church in Bloomingdale.
Anthony Michael Adinolfi, 56, 2109 Faulk Lane, Kingsport, was arrested in September 2011. In October of last year he entered best interest pleas to a pair of counts of solicitation of aggravated statutory rape.
When entering a best interest plea, a defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but agrees that the prosecution could likely prove the charge.
On Tuesday, Sullivan County Circuit Judge Jerry Beck sentenced Adinolfi to 11 months and 29 days incarceration. As of Wednesday morning, no formal written notice of appeal had been filed by Adinolfi’s attorney, according to Sullivan County Assistant District Attorney Julie Canter, though his intention to do so was stated at Tuesday’s sentencing.
Adinolfi had previously applied for probation as well as judicial diversion, both of which were denied by Beck. He is currently free on bond pending his attorney’s appeal.
If the appeal doesn’t occur within a week Adinolfi will be taken into custody.
As sentencing currently stands, Adinolfi would be eligible for parole after serving approximately nine months of his sentence. Canter said he must also comply with requirements of the sex offender registry, including no contact with minors, and he must pay the sex offender surcharge of $3,000.
The Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office previously stated that the incidents between Adinolfi and the teen occurred over a period of two months in 2010. The victim was 16 years old.
Prior to sentencing, Adinolfi had to undergo a sex offender evaluation. Canter says it determined Adinolfi is a low to moderate risk to offend again, though during the process he disclosed a “prior conviction for exhibitionism.”
That incident reportedly occurred in 1981 and was later expunged from his record.
