OKLAHOMA CITY — Tennessee's Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson made the 18-player roster for the 2013 USA Softball women's national team, announced Friday by the Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball.
As a senior in 2013, Chavanne hit .435 with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, 70 runs and 41 stolen bases. Gibson also had a career-best year as a senior, hitting .401 with 19 home runs, 68 RBIs, 14 doubles, 68 runs, a .538 on-base percentage and a .802 slugging percentage, earning her Southeastern Conference player of the year honors.
The roster was finalized following a three-day selection camp at the ASA Hall of Fame complex in Oklahoma City. The 18-player team will regroup in July for its first competition, the World Cup of Softball, which will run from July 11-14 in Oklahoma City.
Team USA will compete in three events in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Following the World Cup, the U.S. team is slated to compete July 16-22 at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, and Aug. 5-18 at an ISF Women's World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
South Florida coach Ken Eriksen will serve as the national team's head coach. Tennessee co-head coach Karen Weekly will serve as an assistant coach alongside fellow assistants Laura Berg (Oregon State), Suzy Brazney (Golden West College), Howard Dobson (LSU) and Mike White (Oregon).
