Volunteers will be scouring the waters and shorelines of Watauga Lake on Saturday, July 20, during the Watauga Lake Cleanup. The fourth annual event is organized by Our Community Gives Back, which has brought as many as 260 participants at a time to the lake in recent years.
According to Mary Salter, president of Our Community Gives Back, registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at two locations: Fish Springs Marina, 191 Fish Springs Road, in Hampton, and Sink Mountain Boat Ramp, Highway 67, in Butler. Garbage picked up from the lake will be returned to those locations and volunteers will receive tickets to a post-event raffle.
The event is a lot of fun and a lot of work, according to Salter.
“Watauga Lake is source of pride for this community, and year after year the community has gotten behind the cleanup 100 percent,” said Salter. “All that live here and visit here want to see the lake clean and beautiful and the cleanup is an important way we can ensure it stays just that way.”
At 2 p.m., participants will have the opportunity to enjoy food and music at Fish Springs Marina as well as win a variety of prizes donated by local businesses from Mountain City and Elizabethton. The more tickets each participant receives for picking up trash, the more chances they have to win.
“We have had great support from local business owners in the form of donations and prizes,” said Salter. “When you volunteer in the cleanup, you can truly know the community is behind you and what you are doing is important.”
Prizes, donations and sponsorships are still being accepted. For information, to donate or to volunteer, contact Mary Salter at (423) 768-0363. You can also follow the cleanup at facebook.com/wataugalakecleanup.comments powered by Disqus
