KINGSPORT — A Kingsport man suspected of taking part in the theft of approximately $2,000 worth of items from a city barn turned himself in to police Thursday after seeing his image on area news reports.
Stephen P. Chastain, 21, 121 Tennessee St., Kingsport, was charged by the Kingsport Police Department with theft of property valued over $1,000 for allegedly helping steal items on Oct. 18 from a barn located at 1225 Tranbarger Drive.
Authorities on Wednesday distributed video and pictures taken by a neighbor to local media in the hopes of identifying the two male suspects involved in the theft.
Authorities said a concrete mixer, tractor equipment and scrap metal were taken. The items had a combined value of $2,000.
Police said Chastain saw himself on a news broadcast before meeting with his attorney and making arrangements to turn himself in at the Kingsport Justice Center.
Additional charges are likely pending in the case, police said.
The video, which was taken around 9:20 a.m. on Oct. 18, shows two white males with a 1970s model Ford F-100 pickup truck backed into a barn in the rear of the Tranbarger Drive property. The two can be seen loading the truck with items.
