A Wednesday afternoon fire has caused extensive damage to a pair of Kingsport apartments, displacing both those residents and the tenants of seven other units in the complex.
Kingsport Fire Department Public Education Officer Barry Brickey says engines responded to the blaze on Sir Echo Drive at approximately 1:10 p.m. One apartment was fully involved when firefighters arrived, with the fire quickly spreading to another unit.
Brickey says one person was transported to the hospital for the treatment of injuries, the extent of which are currently not known. A cause of the fire is under investigation.
Along with the two apartments that were exposed to flames, smoke damage and the need to pull power to the building has affected the tenants of seven additional units.
Brickey reports the American Red Cross has responded to assist all the displaced individuals with housing and other needs. A structural and electrical inspection must be conducted before they can return.
