Welcome, teachers and students! Please join us in the world of Newspaper
In Education. We have a valuable and fun educational program to share
with you.
Who?
Area students and teachers are reading, thinking, and writing with
the daily newspaper.
What?
We have a well-rounded, educational program that supports the work
of educators with newspaper subscriptions, curriculum materials,
presentations, contests, etc.
When?
Throughout the entire year, NIE is a vital presence in area schools.
The regular program runs from August to May. During summer school,
teachers may also order newspapers for use with students.
Where?
We operate in a seven county area in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest
Virginia.
Why?
Our goals are:
- To promote good citizenship and active participation in our democracy;
- To assist in the development of academic skills; and,
- To develop the next generation of newspaper readers.
How?
Teachers attend a special workshop to learn to use the newspaper as
a current, relevant, educational resource. Then, they order newspapers
which are used to teach students of varying ages and abilities.
A certain number of teachers who attend the workshop and order newspapers
for the school year will receive business sponsors who pay for the
newspaper subscriptions.
Teachers may also join NIE at any time throughout the school year
by contacting the NIE office. The cost for student newspapers is
$0.15 per copy.
If our sponsorship funds have already been allocated, you may use school
funds to pay for your newspapers. Alternatively, you may recruit your own sponsor
and NIE will assist with billing, etc.
Call the NIE office today at 1-423-245-4954. We will be glad to help
you enroll in Newspaper In Education! |
