Herald & Tribune to merge with Johnson City Press beginning August 20

After serving the Jonesborough community for more than a century, the Herald & Tribune will publish its final stand-alone edition on Aug. 13, 2025. Beginning Aug. 20, coverage of Jonesborough and surrounding areas will be incorporated into the Johnson City Press, both of which are owned by Six Rivers Media LLC.The decision comes amid ongoing challenges in the local news industry, including declining advertising revenue and subscriber numbers."This is not a decision we made lightly," said Ron Waite, Group Publisher of Six Rivers Media LLC. "We are incredibly proud of the Herald & Tribune's history and the role it has played in the Jonesborough community. But economic realities require us to consolidate our efforts to preserve and strengthen local journalism."The Johnson City Press, which already includes coverage of Jonesborough and all of Washington County, will absorb much of the content traditionally found in the Herald & Tribune's weekly editions. The expanded Wednesday edition of the Johnson City Press will carry dedicated community coverage, including features, public notices and hometown news."We remain fully committed to covering Jonesborough," Waite said. "The name of the publication may change, but the stories, voices, and community spirit will continue."Subscribers to the Herald & Tribune will have several options. They may request a refund of any remaining balance, apply it to an existing Johnson City Press subscription, or use it to start a new subscription. Customer service can be reached at (423)-392-1390 or (423)-722-1330.Advertisers will also have the opportunity to continue reaching local audiences through the Johnson City Press. "We're working closely with our advertising partners to ensure a smooth transition," Waite added. "Our team is ready to help businesses maintain and grow their connections with the community.""This move will ultimately allow us to serve the community more effectively and ensure the long-term sustainability of our local news coverage," said Allen Rau, CEO of Six Rivers Media. "Local journalism is essential, and we're committed to keeping it strong and centered on the people and places that matter most to our readers."Six Rivers Media owns and operates several community newspapers in Northeast Tennessee, including the Kingsport Times News, Johnson City Press, Erwin Record, The Tomahawk, and now a combined Johnson City Press–Herald & Tribune edition. For more information about subscription or advertising options, contact Six Rivers Media at (423)-392-1390 or (423)-722-1330
