What happened to folks involved with the 2010 Sullivan Central High School shooting and its aftermath?

Jubal YennieYennie had been director of schools for Sullivan County for a little more than two months when Thomas Cowan, armed with two loaded pistols and pointing one at a principal and officers, was shot at Sullivan Central High School the morning of Aug. 30, 2010. Yennie after the shooting moved to implement secure entrances at all county schools, decrying what he said he was told was a past delay in that at schools that might become part of the Kingsport school system because of annexation. He and Sheriff Wayne Anderson also lead an unsuccessful charge to get the County Commission to fund school resource officers at middle schools. Yennie left to head a Wyoming school system in 2015.Evelyn RafalowskiRafalowski has worked for the Sullivan County school system since the late 1970s, and at the time of the Sullivan Central shooting her duties including overseeing school safety and security. She recalled taking calls from national news media shortly after the incident began. She became director of schools in 2015 after Jubal Yennie left that position for a job in Wyoming. She is helping oversee the construction of a new high school, which is to serve some students in the current Central zone, and is about three miles from Central, and a new middle school near Sullivan East High School. Wayne AndersonAnderson was in 2010 and remains sheriff of Sullivan County. After the Sullivan Central shooting, he and then-Director of Schools Jubal Yennie led an unsuccessful attempt to get the County Commission to add school resource officers for middle schools. The day of the standoff and shooting, Anderson said he drove faster to Central than he ever has before or since. He remains an advocate for additional school resource officers and fully supports how SRO Carolyn Gudger and later two other officers responded to the situation.Kim KirkKirk was assistant principal of Sullivan Central High School during the 2010 shooting. Sheriff Wayne Anderson said she provided invaluable real-time information about where Cowan and Gudger were during the 13-minute standoff in the building. Kirk recently became principal at Tennessee High in Bristol, Tenn.Carolyn Gudger, Sam Matney and Steve WilliamsGudger, now a 15-year school resource officer, went with then-Central Principal Melanie Riden when Thomas Cowan requested to meet with Riden at the front desk of the school. Cowan soon pulled a loaded pistol on Riden, but she left and Gudger started a 13-minute standoff that moves from the secured entrance of the school into hallways at Central. Patrol officer Sam Matney, now a Washington County, Va., deputy, and Lt. Steve Williams, now a Sullivan County detective, arrived at the locked-down school and gained access from keys thrown from a window.Melanie Riden-BaconRiden-Bacon, who was Riden during during her time at Central, is a former Sullivan South High teacher who was principal at Sullivan Central in 2010. Thomas Cowan held a loaded pistol aimed at her head a few feet away at the secure entrance of the school, but she went inside the school shortly after that. She later became principal of Science Hill High in Johnson City, where she had worked before, and this year became head of Topper Academy that is administered by Science Hill. She has presented what happened at Central to various emergency responder groups in Tennessee and other states, which she said was her way of dealing with the shooting.Thomas CowanCowan was a Navy veteran and brother of Central janitor Rodney Cowan, who still works for the county school system but in a different capacity. Another connection to the school was that the Cowan family sold the land upon which Central was built to the school system in the late 1960s. According to his sister, Cowan was diagnosed with mental issues by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Richmond, and police records indicate he had past run-ins with police in which he was armed. After the standoff, authorities said he refused to put down his weapon and continued to point it at Carolyn Gudger and two other officers who later responded. After six shots fired, two from each officer, he was transported to a hospital but declared dead. He was buried with military honors rifle fire four days later at the Gunnings Cemetery within earshot of Central High, but Central students were released early that day.
