ROUNDUP: D-B hangs 109 on Asheville in season-opening rout

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett basketball had no issues getting out of the starting blocks on Tuesday evening. The Indians ran laps around Asheville in the Buck Van Huss Dome to the tune of a 109-30 offensive onslaught. D-B led 29-20 after the first quarter, then put on a defensive show in the middle of the game. Between the second and third quarters, the Indians outpaced the Cougars 62-3. Dobyns-Bennett limited Asheville to just one made field goal while draining nine 3-pointers in the middle 16 minutes. Six different Indians reached double-figures in the rout. Kaden Cutlip dropped 20 points and Henry Hill scored 18, while Elijah Thomas and TJ Maxwell had 14 points apiece. Garrison Jones added 11 points and Levi Webb scored 10. Ford Daniels scored 10 points for Asheville. Tennessee High 70, South Greene 35 BRISTOL, Tenn. — The Vikings had a balanced offensive effort to double up the Rebels. Cannon Swift led all scorers with 15 points, and was one of five Tennessee High players to score at least 10 points. Zayden Poole had 14, Braden Howard chipped in a dozen, and both Caiden Terry and Reed Miller scored 11. Lucas Coach was the top Rebel scorer with nine. Cherokee 67, Morristown West 61, OT MORRISTOWN — It took an extra period, but the Chiefs earned a road victory to start the season. In the overtime period, both teams only made one field goal. But Cherokee found itself on the free throw line eight times while not sending MoWest to the stripe once. Elijah Carmack made the lone Chiefs overtime bucket and went 3-of-4 from the line on his way to a 23-point effort. The Trojans were led by Will Desgroseilliers' 16 points. West Greene 74, University High 56 JOHNSON CITY — The Buffaloes methodically worked their way out to a comfortable lead late to down the Buccaneers. Four West Greene players reached double-figure point totals: Josiah Davidson (17), Ayden Lamons (16), Tytus Shelton (14), and Carter Stills (10). Jansen West led UH with 21 points, Ty Templin poured in 18. Tri-Cities Christian 59, Asheville Christian (N.C.) 57 BLOUNTVILLE — Lofton Looney led a balanced offensive attack for the Eagles with 13 points in the season-opening win. Lonny Holland and Aaron Pomrenke each posted 11 points. Jordan Peters added 10 points. Unaka 83, ACTS (Va.) 58 ELIZABETHTON — The second game in as many days, the quick turnaround didn't seem to affect the Rangers much. John Hardin was a problem in the paint, erupting for 32 points. Peyton Guess and Aiden Walsh also chipped in, pouring in 16 and 15 points, respectively. Luke Smith had 17 points to lead ACTS and Sam Horn added 14. Grainger 57, Unaka 49ELIZABETHTON — Carter Williams posted a 24-point effort to lead the Grizzlies over the Rangers on Monday night. Kade Williams added 12 points to the Grainger cause. Aiden Walsh led three Unaka players in double figures with 17 points. John Hardin accounted for 14 points and Peyton Guess came through with 11. GIRLSDobyns-Bennett 66, Asheville (N.C.) 32KINGSPORT — The Lady Indians wasted little time settling into their Opening Night contest against Asheville, starting the night on an 11-3 run in the first quarter. D-B ballooned its lead from eight to 18 by the halftime intermission, and continued to cruise from there. Reese Haselton led the Lady Indian scoring effort with 15 points, all coming from 3-pointers. Sally McReynolds chipped in 11 and Ariana Thomas scored 10. The Lady Cougars were led by a game-high 16 points from Layla Hunter, with all of her points coming after halftime. Tennessee High 53, Science Hill 42 BRISTOL, Tenn. — Science Hill opened the season with a trip to Viking Hall and couldn't come out with a victory. Tennessee High stymied the Lady Hilltoppers in the early going, just allowing five points to the hosts' 16, and Science Hill couldn't close the gap. Lady Vikings junior Addie Wilhoit dropped 18 points in the win, with seven coming in the final five minutes to close it out. Jasmine Jones tacked on 11 for THS. Clara Crowe led the way for Science Hill with 11 points, and Allie Connor chipped in 10. Cloudland 61, David Crockett 35 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Matt Birchfield's Lady Highlanders put on a show for the home crowd to start the 2025-26 campaign. Makinna Shell led Cloudland with 21 points while going 9-of-14 from the field. Eowyn McCoury also reached double digits by scoring 10. Kayleigh Doner led the Lady Pioneers with a 19-point effort. West Greene 42, University High 28JOHNSON CITY — The Lady Buccaneers got off to a slow start by only scoring three points in the first quarter and couldn't recover. West Greene did a good job of closing out UH, outscoring the hosts 9-2 in the final eight minutes. Payton Norton led all scorers with 17 points for the Lady Buffaloes. She also drained four triples. University High was paced by a 10-point effort by Maggie Ryder. Emma Linkous added eight.
