Crockett hopes rest heavily on Wynn, Slone

Many of David Crockett's hopes for the 2025 season rest on the No. 4 and No. 5 players.Junior quarterback A.J. Wynn wears the No. 4 jersey, while all-around athlete Zeke Slone sports the No. 5. Crockett head coach Hayden Chandley makes no bones how important the duo are to the Pioneers' success."We will go as far as four and five will take us," Chandley said. "Zeke's played the most football of anybody on our roster, and we're going to be counting on him quite a bit."They're not the only ones with experience. In fact, the Pioneers have more guys on the offensive line with guys who have been under the Friday night lights than any time in the past."The first time in my career, every one of our starting offensive linemen have starting experience," Chandley said. "I've never had that before. Now, the downside to that is you lose four of those after this year, but we've got a lot of experience up front. You got a quarterback with a year plus under his belt, Zeke is back, which is a lot of our production last year."Wynn is the starter at quarterback with Brady Hendrix and Slone listed as backups. Sam Casey is the starting tailback with Slone listed behind him. Slone is the starting H-back on the depth chart with Ezra Hoss his backup.Chace Taylor and Jaxon Overstreet are starting receivers with Markcis Carrier and Shawn Summers their backups. Colton Mullis is listed at tight end."We've got some new faces at receiver, but we feel really good about the guys that are coming back," Chandley. "Quite a bit of a good mix of experience in youth. So hopefully we're going to be able to rely on those old guys up front, control the line of scrimmage and make defenses pay when they stack the box on us."Isaiah Garland is the starting center with Ethan Perry and Tyler Ball at guards. Keegan Stonesifer and Devon Sanders are tackles with some of the reserves Mike White and Conner Cowan.Most of the players are two-way with Mullis and Perry ends in the 3-4 defense and Devon Sanders at nose tackle. Slone and Hoss are inside linebackers, while Casey and Carson Blackburn on the outside.Christian Brady and Overstreet are corners with Carrier and Summers at safeties. Overstreet, the son of former Crockett great Josh Overstreet, is one whom the Pioneers feel could be a breakout season."Jaxon battled some injuries and different things, but he had a tremendous off season, put on 10 or 15 pounds," Chandley said. "Probably our most electric guy with the ball in his hands, as far as speed goes, big play capability. So we're going to move him all over the field. Got a real nose for the football on defense, and we're excited to see him have a breakout junior campaign."While the team has talent, it's a brutal first-half of the season with Unicoi County, West Ridge, Morristown East, Morristown West and Sevier County."We start with the defending Region 1-3A champions, and then back-to-back 6-A schools with West Ridge and Morristown East," Chandley said. "That leads you right into Morristown West so there's no room to slack at the beginning of the year."No. Name Pos.
