Chappell's fourth TD lifts D-B over Farragut in OT, into second round

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett quarterback Levi Chappell would've gladly waited another hour, or 10, if it meant the Indians would advance in the 6A playoffs.They don't have to be pretty this time of year, after all. But his winning touchdown run in overtime worked to near perfection, as the Indians advanced to the second round with Friday's 27-21 at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.Farragut had fumbled on its overtime possession, giving D-B (10-1) the chance for instant victory. Chappell kept around the right side for seven yards. But almost as soon as the ball was snapped, lightning flashed overhead with thunder roaring over Kingsport.The ensuing delay gave Chappell roughly 50 minutes between that run and his game winner, three yards on a read option left"We'll take the win any way we can get it," Chappell said. "For us to be able to come out here, the line blocking for me, I walk in untouched, that was amazing."Chappell accounted for all four touchdowns while leading the Tribe in both rushing and passing. He kept the ball 19 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns while completing 19-of-29 passes for 265 yards and another score.Logan Wright, who had rallied the Admirals (3-8) with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, got the call again on Farragut's first play in overtime. Kedrick Harris not only stuffed him but knocked the ball free. He and Noah Raines shields Farragut players long enough for Zayden Hayes to recover and set up the winning score. Unofficially, Raines led the Tribe in tackles with nine."It means the world to me. I wasn't going to let my senior season be over," said Raines, who earlier had missed four games due to illness. "Our defense makes plays, been great all season. We just have to keep playing and keep being great."WRIGHT BACK IN ITD-B had built a 21-7 lead in the third quarter when Farragut rallied. Chappell hit Tyree Thomas in stride down the visitor sideline for a 50-yard touchdown just 1:31 into the second half.The Admirals turned D-B over on fourth down to begin a 51-yard scoring march, culminating with Wright's four-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.And after a D-B three-and-out, Wright sparked another drive with a 33-yard gallop. His 14-yard touchdown tied it with 7:35 remaining.Twice, D-B had a chance for the winning score in regulation, reaching the red zone only to lose a fumble before Harrison Smith's interception.EMPHATIC RESPONSED-B failed on fourth down to end its opening drive but pulled even on its second possession, moving 92 yards in 11 plays. Chappell's 14-yard run ignited the drive, and he found Jaylen Thomas twice on wide receiver screens for a total of 25 yards. His 21-yard keeper moved the ball to Farragut's 14, and he kept for an 8-yard touchdown two plays later.The Indians' second scoring drive covered 87 yards, and got going when Chappell hit Admire Fikes along the sideline for 14 yards. Chappell kept twice for gains of 19 and 18 yards, eventually scoring on a 2-yard keeper left for a 14-7 halftime lead.Farragut drove 80 yards in 12 plays on its opening drive, mostly through the air including Corbin Hobson's 32-yard completion to Max Garfield on third-and-6. On fourth-and-goal from the 1, Hobson powered his way for a 7-0 Admiral lead.STAT LEADERSTyree Thomas was once again Chappell's top target, catching eight passes for 133 yards. Jaylen Thomas caught six passes for 54, with Hayes grabbing two receptions for 33."Levi and Tyree, they're best friends, hang out together off the field so much," D-B coach Joey Christian said. "We'd like to get it in the zone a little more on offense. I thought our defense overall played pretty good all night … Just glad to get out of here with a win with a group of kids who played so hard."Luke Lundy (14 carries for 56 yards) and Emmitt Starnes (10 carries for 41 yards) led D-B in the ground game.Hobson went 8-of-21 passing for 110 yards, hitting Garfield four times for 67 and John Haskins twice for 40. Wright rushed for 74 yards on 12 carries. Carter Collier and Charlie Noble both had 30.The outcome dropped Farragut to 0-11 all-time at J.
