West Ridge heads to David Crockett in statement game for both

One more victory, and David Crockett's football team will exceed its 2023 win total. For West Ridge, it's one final tuneup before the most critical stretch of the year.Sitting at 0-2 in Region 1-6A after last week's loss at William Blount, the Wolves (3-2) entertain Big East rivals Science Hill and Jefferson County in back-to-back weeks.Not only are the Wolves seeking redemption, but they're also looking to reach the aforementioned stretch on a healthy note. Senior quarterback Trey Frazier helped the Wolves rolled to a 43-7 victory last year in Blountville, but he didn't get to suit up again in 2023 after suffering an injury.Other than a 57-yard run by Sam Perry, West Ridge's ground game didn't materialize last week.Crockett (3-1), meanwhile, has at least positioned itself for a playoff berth after starting 2-0 in Region 1-5A. It took a 35-7 Musket Bowl victory and a 41-38 triumph at Cocke County to get there.The A.J. Wynn-Lamarkus Dunn connection shined for 150 yards and a touchdown. Not to mention the running of Jon Hall and Zeke Slone in addition to Wynn.West Ridge has won two of its first three meetings all-time with Crockett, but the Pioneers are two years removed from their 27-23 victory in Blountville. The Wolves took the lone previous meeting in Jonesborough 24-6 in 2021.Campbell County at Daniel BooneNot since the Musket Bowl have the Trailblazers (0-5) scored. But they haven't quit, holding 4A power Elizabethton to seven first-half points last week before wearing down. Cole Stevenson cracked the century mark passing, most of his completions going to Quinlan Held.Campbell County (1-4) hasn't fared much better. Led by former state champion coach Mark Pemberton, the Cougars didn't find the end zone until their 21-13 win over The King's Academy in Week 3. They've since lost to Clinton (29-7) and Lenoir City (34-14).Boone won last year's inaugural meeting 44-21 in Jacksboro.Sullivan East at ElizabethtonThe Cyclones (3-1, 2-0 Region 1-4A) flexed their muscles in the second half against Daniel Boone, behind the run-pass balance of quarterback Rhett Slagle (3 touchdowns, 139 total yards). The balance meets the air raid in this week's game at Citizens Bank Stadium, as the Cyclones look to continue their dominance over conference teams not named Greeneville.Despite another solid passing effort from Peyton Lingerfelt, the Patriots (1-4, 1-1) wore down against Grainger. And every conference game matters from here if East wants to return to the playoffs.Other than a hiatus in 2015-16, the teams have met every year since 1969. Elizabethton leads 49-5, with East's last win coming in 2007.Volunteer at GreenevilleThe fifth-ranked Greene Devils (3-2, 1-0 Region 1-4A) took out their frustrations in last week's 42-6 win at Morristown West. Led by Carson Quillen, the fourth-highest scoring player in Greeneville history, the Devils look to make it 20 straight region wins.The Falcons (0-4, 0-2) have been close their last three games — losing by three, three and eight points before last week's bye.Greeneville has won all 18 meetings, allowing just one touchdown in the past five.Seymour at CherokeeLandon Jeffers and the Chiefs (3-2) are riding high after ending the toughest part of their schedule with last week's 28-21 triumph at Northview Academy. Not to mention, Cherokee won four of its last five games to end 2023 starting with a 33-30 victory at Seymour.Madden Guffey already had 864 yards and nine touchdowns for the pass-oriented Eagles (0-5).Last year's win closed Seymour's lead in the all-time series to 8-5.Tennessee High at AbingdonThe schedule hasn't gotten easier for Tennessee High (2-2). The Vikings follow last week's defeat to second-ranked Sevier County with a trip to undefeated Abington (4-0).Only one of the Falcons victories came by less than 20 points, a 31-28 win over Christiansburg. Abingdon is coming off a 56-6 win over Richlands.Tennessee High leads the series 12-4, including last year's 28-14 win in Bristol.Union at Gate CityIf the Blue Devils (3-1, 0-1 Mountain 7) want to stay in the district championship race, they must block for junior running back Walker Hillman. They did in last week's 34-0 win at Marion, but Union (2-2, 1-0) has outscored Virginia teams 106-7 so far.The seven points came in a 7-6 loss last week to reigning Region 2D champion Graham, and the Bears look to end a two-game skid.Union leads the series 11-5 after last year's 35-0 win at Bullitt Park.Rye Cove at CastlewoodLandon Lane and Rye Cove (4-0, 1-0 Cumberland) haven't done much wrong to start the season, averaging 58 points per game while allowing more than six points only once, and even that came against the defending Region 1D champion.The Blue Devils (0-4, 0-1), on the other hand, have scored 13 points total this year while giving up 44.Castlewood leads the series 22-13, but the Eagles have dominated the last two including 70-0 last year in Clinchport.Cumberland Gap at Twin SpringsThe Titans (2-1) couldn't get its offense going in last week's district loss at J.I. Burton. But neither could Cumberland Gap (0-5), coming up short in a 60-14 home loss to conference rival Hampton.Twin Springs has taken both meetings with the Panthers, winning 55-16 last year on the road.Saturday Unaka at Happy ValleyWhether he's running or throwing, Gabe McDougald has emerged as a leader for Happy Valley (3-0), which has won 10 straight regular season games. And the Warriors will naturally turn to their ground attack to keep the ball away from Connor McKinney and Unaka (0-4).The Rangers have been able to find the end zone, but have struggled to keep the opposition out of it. Twin Springs' 39 points is the lowest output against the Rangers so far.The rivalry dates back to 1950, with Happy Valley holding a 42-16 lead. The Warriors ended Unaka's three-game win streak in the series with last year's 35-0 win in Stoney Creek.Cloudland at HamptonThe question here is which team can pound the rock better? Both teams have their star running backs — Grayson Cole for Cloudland (2-2) and Dominique Burleson at Hampton (1-4).The Bulldogs are riding high after last week's region win, while Cloudland has had a bye following a 27-16 defeat against Class 3A's eighth-ranked Johnson County.Hampton has won the last seven, most recently 50-6 in Roan Mountain, to take a 61-29 lead in the series which also originated in 1950.Gatlinburg-Pittman at Johnson CountyThis week, the eighth-ranked Longhorns (5-0, 1-0 Region 1-3A) get to see where they truly stack up. Juan Mejia, Jace Stout and Sam Cretsinger have yet to play a game decided by single digits.It'll be the conference G-P (3-2), which fell out of the top 10 after last week's 34-14 loss at Fulton.The Highlanders lead the series 10-1 after last year's 49-6 win in Gatlinburg, the teams' first meeting since the 2018 playoffs.
