DB Band honored by state lawmakers

NASHVILLE — State Sen. Bobby Harshbarger, R-Kingsport, passed a resolution Thursday honoring the 100th anniversary of the Dobyns-Bennett High School marching band. The two-page long bill text describes the band members as a "renowned group of young musicians" and a "source of pride for Kingsport, Sullivan County, and the State of Tennessee." "I was honored to present a resolution recognizing the Dobyns-Bennett High School Band as it celebrates its centennial year," said Harshbarger in a statement. "As a proud Dobyns-Bennett alumnus, it meant a great deal to recognize a program that has shaped generations of students, instilled discipline and teamwork, and brought national recognition to Kingsport and Sullivan County." Harshbarger highlighted the plethora of success achieved by the band over the years, including multiple nationwide championships and performances at Carnegie Hall, the Rose Bowl and the Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade. "Really, we're just a bunch of winners," said Harshbarger while introducing the legislation on the Senate floor. "I want everyone to know that." The Dobyns-Bennett Band program includes a football marching band, color guard, competitive marching band, three concert bands and a percussion ensemble. When it was created in 1926, the program had 45 students. Today, it has an annual enrollment of 350 students. "For 100 years, the Dobyns-Bennett Band has represented our community with excellence, and I am grateful for the opportunity to honor its legacy and the students, directors, and supporters who continue that tradition today," said Harshbarger. "Roll Tribe!" Though resolutions are not legally binding, they serve as a statewide recognition for people and organizations across Tennessee.
