Rare spotless giraffe Kipekee dies at Brights Zoo

Kipekee, a rare spotless giraffe believed to be one of only a handful ever documented, has died at Brights Zoo in Limestone after what veterinarians determined was a congenital abnormality. The private, family-owned zoo announced this week that a full veterinary necropsy performed by the University of Tennessee found Kipekee was born with a developmental defect affecting the blood vessels of her liver. The condition prevented her liver from functioning normally and kept her body from properly processing nutrients and maintaining healthy reserves over time. Owner David Bright said he was surprised by the findings. "I would like to say I was totally surprised," Bright said. "My guess would have been more GI-related or something like that, so I was kind of surprised it was liver-related." Although the condition had been present since birth, zoo officials said her decline happened rapidly at the end. Bright said there was no indication in routine care that something was wrong. "Our vets have their own dedicated vet team — they're travel vets, they come in quite often and they're just managing diet, body condition, things like that," Bright said. "This was something that was non-detectable in daily exams or blood work. We just really had no way of being able to prevent it." Kipekee drew international attention for her spotless coat, lacking the signature patchwork pattern typical of giraffes. Bright said the zoo has asked veterinarians whether her rare appearance could be connected to her liver abnormality, but there are too few documented cases to know. "We haven't linked that yet," Bright said. "That's a question we've asked our vets to see if they could research enough to see, but since there's only been a couple of these documented solid giraffes, it's really hard to know if that's tied together or not." Brights Zoo, which opened its gates in 2007, houses rare and endangered species including addax, bongo, scimitar-horned oryx and Bactrian camels, along with red kangaroos, spider monkeys, pandas and zebras. Kipekee quickly became one of its most recognizable animals. "She was definitely our sweetest giraffe and loved attention," Bright said. "When you went in to do work with the giraffes, she was always the first one to you, looking for treats and looking for that kind of affection between the keeper and her." In a social media post, the zoo said Kipekee "passed away far too young" but was "deeply loved and cared for every day of her life." Staff members said they were grateful to provide her with comfort and dedicated care throughout her life. Bright said the outpouring of community support has brought comfort to the staff. "The comments that I've seen at least on our page have all been very positive, which is comforting," he said. For those wishing to honor Kipekee, Bright encouraged donations in her name to the nonprofit Save Giraffes Now to support giraffe conservation in the wild. "That way she continues to help giraffes in the wild," he said. Kipekee's death marks the loss of a one-of-a-kind animal whose spotless coat captured attention worldwide, but zoo officials said her legacy will continue through conservation efforts and the memories she created for visitors and staff alike.
