Get to know... Tim Coleman

Tim Coleman has been involved in music as long as I've known him and, even with a few breaks for school and family, can't seem to get away from it. Whether he's playing, booking, managing, recording or promoting bands on his label, he's got his finger on the pulse of regional rock. And, by rock, I mean heavy, heavy rock. Tim might know about other forms of music and he might be into other forms of music, but he plays a loud, mean bass. And he plays loud music. The heavier the better, it seems. Tim is that guy who's always willing to help another musician, always willing to work a show and always willing to offer needed advice or guidance. He's a good musician and a good guy, so you should definitely take the time to get to know Tim Coleman. When did you decide music was going to be a big part of your life, and how did you first get involved? "It was the summer between 9th and 10th grade. I met Jordan Powers from the band Far-Less and he introduced me to the world of local and DIY music. I went to my first show at the Hurricane Bowl in Marion, Virginia and was blown away by the fact that you didn't have to go to Freedom Hall or Viking Hall to see bands play. I guess I'd never really thought about where bands started. After that show, I knew I wanted to be in a band. I realized for the first time that it was something attainable. I didn't know how to play an instrument, so I borrowed a bass from my neighbors dad and started my first band. We were terrible, but it led to the development of Antihero Productions with my best friend Dave. We booked a ton of metal and hardcore shows in the Tri Cities between 2004 and 2014. I played in several bands in the area with moderate success and gained a ton of valuable experience through a business relationship with Sumerian Records because of OG Antihero. To make it short - I woke up one day, said this is who I am and who I'm going to be, and that's who became the guy you see today." Is your current project a first, or have you been involved in other things? "Septum Bone is definitely not a first. I played in If Looks Could Kill, Human Excoriation, The Running List, Beards and Bats, and a few other smaller bands that didn't do much. Antihero Talent Group is the evolution of the OG Antihero Productions. - we focus on artist development, management and booking instead of concert promotion now, though." What is it about music that makes you want to perform or be involved? "This question is a two pronged answer for me. First and foremost, the music community has given me almost every positive thing I have in my life today. Secondly, performing is therapeutic for me. There are very few moments in my life where I can truly live in the moment. That time on stage forces me to live in the moment. The only things that exist or matter at that time are the songs and the people in front of me. It's freeing." How would you describe your music? "Septum Bone is a mishmash of Death Metal and Hardcore. We try to have a good time with it, we're cave man themed, our songs are about smashing rocks and making fire. It was a joke band until we started actually getting opening slots for bands like Vader and Origin and requests to play festivals. Antihero Talent Group is a collection of artists who I believe in and work with on a daily basis to help them achieve their goals. Whether that's booking, rolling out a new album, overall band management. I love doing that stuff and I'm incredibly thankful to work with these amazing artists to try and get where they want to go." Is this something you see yourself doing as a career? "Antihero is definitely a career choice. Septum Bone gives me a release for my creative energy and an opportunity to write music with some of my best friends. My ship has sailed as far as touring is concerned, so Septum Bone likely would never be a full time career." What are your other interests? Do you have any surprise talents or hobbies? "I'm a big sports guy. I spent time with the Bristol White Sox when I lived in the area and helped them book a summer concert series that showcased local artists. I played a lot of sports growing up The past few years I've gotten way into grilling and smoking meats - I can make a killer brisket. I'm not sure I have many surprise talents, I'm pretty much a 'what you see is what you get' kind of dude." Who are your influences/favorites (worldwide and local)? "On a local level, some of the biggest influences for me were the guys in Far-Less, I wouldn't be doing this without Jordan Powers. In Remembrance of Me (IROM) was another big influence for me locally. Guys like Pat Carter and Scott Thomas from Omega Tribe who helped pave the way for guys like me. On a non-local level, I listen to a ton of hardcore and death metal, so bands like Bane, Converge, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Hatebreed and Crowbar have been very influential on my writing style and my approach to music as a whole." If you could tell people one thing they should know about you, what would it be? "Music saved my life. It has given me purpose and direction. I honestly believe I would be dead had I not fallen into the Tri-Cities music scene when I was younger." How can people contact you about booking and information?
