Q & A with Hunter Woodall

Hunter Woodall is an independent running for the District 1 Sullivan County Commission seat. A Republican and Democrat also are seeking the seat in the Aug. 6 general election but unopposed in their respective party primaries, so all three will be on the August ballot. The incumbent is not seeking re-election. Q: Why are you running for this position? "I am running for County Commission to advocate for those who have been forgotten. For too long, District 1 has been overlooked. I am committed to ensuring our community finally receives the dedicated representation and attention it deserves to make a meaningful difference." Q: What experiences have prepared or qualified you for this position? "I have over 20 years of leadership experience, including serving as a chief at the Volunteer Fire Department, a facility chief and sergeant in the U.S. Army and a Controller In Charge with the FAA (Federal Aviction Agency). Currently, I serve as director for the (Sullivan County) Veterans Service Office." Q: What are your top goals and priorities, if elected? "My top goals are to reduce the tax burden on our citizens and eliminate property taxes for elderly and disabled individuals, including Veterans. Additionally, I aim to establish a veterans home in the Tri-Cities area." Q: What do you believe are the strengths and weaknesses of Sullivan County government? What does this governing body do well, and how could it improve? "A key strength of our current government is its relationship with employees; the commission effectively ensures departments have the resources necessary to operate the county. However, a notable weakness is the lack of a strong working relationship with our Board of Education, which is an area that requires improvement." Question 5: What issues do you feel are most important to residents, and how do you plan to connect with constituents and address their concerns? "The most pressing issues currently are taxes and property assessment values. I am available 24/7 to speak with residents, listen to their input, and develop actionable plans to address their concerns. I am committed to meeting with constituents wherever and whenever necessary to ensure their voices are heard."
