Get to know... Jim Price

Years ago, I was in a good band looking to record our second album. Our first went over pretty well, so we wanted to work with someone who could make the second one special. One name popped up from everyone we talked to - Jim Price. A recording engineer and bassist, we were told he would be the man to find our sound. And he certainly was. Jim has that knack - he knows how to get the best from people (and from himself). He's a top-notch bass player with a long history of good band and cohorts and he has made his living in music, which is an amazing feat in itself. He has been nominated for Grammys, worked with top-tier musicians and left his mark on music in this region for decades. On top of all that, he's one heck of a good guy. He's currently playing some great country music with his band Silver Stallion, and if you see them playing out, I would highly suggest catching a show. For now, spend a few moments and get to know Jim Price. When did you decide music was going to be a big part of your life, and how did you first get involved? "I first got involved as a trumpet player in Jr High. Soon picked up guitar and dove into learning blues and classic rock of the day. During high school I developed pretty strong feelings that I wanted to do music as a career. With the realization that winning the lottery might be easier than making it in the music industry, my backup plan was to lean on my other passion for electronics, and pursue an education as a Recording Engineer, which I've been blessed to do for almost 40 years now." Is this current project the first, or have you been involved in other things? "I've been involved in many different things. As I chose not to relocate to one of the music meccas - Nashville, New York or LA, I've had to wear many hats and diversify my musical ventures as a survival mechanism. I've spent time touring in Top Forty and Country bands, done hundreds of dates as a live sound mixer, and been successful as a recording Engineer / Mixer, including five Grammy Nominated projects." What is it about music that makes you want to perform or be involved? "The camaraderie and feeling you get with a group of musicians grooving on stage, and looking out into an audience and seeing that people are connecting with the music you're performing." How would you describe your music/band/project? "My current band project is with Silver Stallion - a Highwaymen tribute show. Not only do I get to work with some of my favorite players, but we're covering music from some of the biggest icons of Country music, so the response is always very enthusiastic!" Is this something you see yourself doing as a career?" "I hope to continue as long as the ever changing music industry(and AI) will allow." What are your other interests? Do you have any surprise talents or hobbies? "I enjoy photography, primarily landscape and scenic, and I've always been fascinated with computers, so I'm currently trying to educate myself in cyber security." Who are your influences/favorites (worldwide and local)? "In the bass world that would be David Hood, Chuck Rainey, Geddy Lee, Aston Barrett, Victor Wooten, Dave LaRue, Carol Kaye, Dave Pomeroy & Gary Lunn. Engineers I study are Gary Paczosa, Neal Cappelino, Chuck Ainlay, Bill Schnee, Roger Nichols & Bill Szymczyk. Locally some of my favorite players are Tommy Starnes, Don Eanes, Tim Stafford & Trey Hensley. I would definitely like to recognize some of the people who have made it possible for me to pursue a music career from the place I love - Charlie & Alan Maggard, Bobby Starnes, Dwayne Castle & Dave Eggar."
