ROUNDUP: D-B baseball completes undefeated run through district

KINGSPORT — Cooper Galyon's first varsity home run at Dobyns-Bennett will long be remembered, and not just for the hit itself. Inspired by seeing a similar celebration by LSU recently, and with verbal permission from his parents, Galyon launched a bat flip for the ages. His three-run home run ended Tuesday's game instantly by run rule, as the Indians took down West Ridge 16-4 at J. Fred Johnson Stadium to finish an undefeated run through District 1-4A. "I just asked my parents, because I don't play a lot, can I just absolutely pimp one? They were like 'yeah, sure.' So I just went out there and did it," Galyon said. "First pitch, I think it was a hanging curveball and I just swung." It was D-B's second home run of the day, after Cam Hayworth had clubbed a two-run shot to right in the fifth for a 12-4 lead. Taylor Blankenship hit 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead D-B offensively. Kaden Cutlip, celebrating his birthday, went 2-for-3 and scored three times. Jaylen Thomas and Gabe Edwards had two hits apiece. Garrison Jones went four innings and struck out three while scattering three hits. "I could've kept going, but it was a good decision (to take me out)," Jones said. "It's awesome to come in here first year and just dominate and play to the best of our abilities. We can literally go any direction we want with what we have and succeed with it." Dale Martin got West Ridge on the board in the fifth, hitting a three-run double and then scoring himself to get the Wolves within 9-4. Parker Senn also had a double. The Indians (25-4) finished 8-0 in conference play and will be the No. 1 seed for the District 1-4A tournament. Elizabethton 4, Daniel Boone 3 GRAY — Ryan Kasting's one-out RBI single in the top of the seventh lifted the Cyclones to victory, as Elizabethton won the season series over Boone to take over first place in the District 1-3A standings. Carter Reece had pulled Betsy even with his RBI single in the sixth. Kasting finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jack Blevins doubled. Rhett Slagle went the distance and allowed five hits while striking out five and not allowing any earned runs. T.J. Leonard hit 2-for-4 to lead Boone. Warner Stallard hit an RBI single and drove in two runs total, while Tanner Orth doubled. Twin Springs 4, J.I. Burton 3 NICKELSVILLE — The Titans got all four of their runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Finch's two-out single plated two runs to break a 2-2 tie. Xavier Sawyer scored a run and singled for Twin Springs' only other hit. Isaiah Kiser matched Sawyer with seven strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings in relief for the win, with Clay Ross getting the save. Chance Long went 2-for-4 to lead Burton. Unicoi County 15, Volunteer 3 ERWIN — Isaac Harris finished a triple shy of the cycle, batting 4-for-4 with five RBIs for the Blue Devils. Kolby Jones and Alex Laningham both hit a single and a double, combining for five RBIs. Jones struck out five over three innings for the win. Bryson Russell had an RBI hit for the Falcons. Greeneville 2, University High 0 JOHNSON CITY — Will Harmon struck out six batters and tossed a three-hit shutout to win a pitchers' duel against Cole Stevenson, who struck out seven and allowed six hits. Tegan Begley went 2-for-4 with a double, and Jaxon Winter's RBI single broke the scoreless tie. Tennessee High 17, Sullivan East 4 BLUFF CITY — Russell Blevins and Zion Brookwell both hit grand slams for Tennessee High. Dayne Musick doubled twice and went 3-for-6 with Knox Keesee, Hudson Pender, Preston Feagins and Brookwell had two hits each. Brodie Meyers went 5 2/3 innings and struck out six. Peyton Lingerfelt hit a solo home run for the Patriots, who got an RBI hit from Luke Blevins. North Greene 18, Happy Valley 4 BAILEYTON — Isaac Gaby doubled three times, finishing 4-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the Huskies. Tyler Britton and Colten Suggs had two hits each. Grady Goulds hit a triple and a double with two runs scored for Happy Valley. Chuckey-Doak 7, Johnson County 6 AFTON — Braxton Lowe knocked a two-out RBI single in the seventh, scoring Gavin Crum and giving Chuckey-Doak the walk-off win. B Palazzo had tied the score with a two-out RBI single of his own two batters prior. Lowe went 3-for-5 with a double. Crum, Randall Sauceman and Lynkin Cutshaw had two hits each. Avery Jones went 3-for-3 to lead the Longhorns, who got a double from Carson Jennings. John S. Battle 21, Gate City 9 GATE CITY — Caden Sturgill doubled twice, Carter Helton (2-for-4) tripled and Ryan Rutledge had two hits along with six RBIs and three runs scored for the Trojans. Dylan Carter hit 3-for-4 and scored four times for Gate City, which got two hits apiece from Hayden Wilson (4 RBIs) and Evan Shortt. Castlewood 17, Rye Cove 2 CLINCHPORT — Aden Phillips jumpstarted Castlewood with a two-run bomb in the first, as the Blue Devils led 8-0 and pulled away with a seven-run fifth. Dalten Keith went 3-for-4 while Jayden Clark (double), Phillips and Joel Bush all had two hits. Jared Glovier struck out seven in his six-hit win. Ty Hood went 2-for-2 with a double, and Cole Barnette tripled for Rye Cove. SOFTBALL Gillenwater throws perfect game NICKELSVILLE — Makenzie Gillenwater tossed a six-inning perfect game for Twin Springs, striking out 14 as the Lady Titans blanked J.I. Burton 10-0. Lindsay Dean hit 3-for-3 with a double to lead the offense, while Gillenwater (3 RBIs), Kasey Robinson (3 RBIs) and Sophie Scalf had two hits apiece. David Crockett 4, Elizabethton 0 JONESBOROUGH — Madelyn Dulaney and the Lady Pioneers capped an unblemished run through District 1-3A. The junior ace struck out 17 in her one-hit shutout Tuesday while batting 3-for-3 with am RBI double. Rheagan Haney hit an RBI single in the first inning. Unicoi County 19, South Greene 0 ERWIN — Lela Byrd homered twice, including a grand slam, and batted 3-for-3 as the Lady Blue Devils coasted past their closest pursuer in district play. She also struck out 13 in her three-hit win. Abigail Peterson hit a double and a grand slam of her own, and Kaley Toney hit 3-for-5 with five RBIs and a three-run blast. Aaliyah Engle and Emmi Linkous (2 doubles, 3 RBIs) had two hits each. Volunteer 9, Cherokee 2 ROGERSVILLE — Maddie Holder and Sydney New both left the yard for the Lady Falcons against their county rivals, both finishing 3-for-4 and driving in three runs. Holder finished a triple shy of the cycle. Jayden Ford, Danni Guinn (double) and Raylie Gray (double) had two hits each. Emily Walker struck out 15 in her three-hit win. Kierce Manis singled with two RBIs for the Lady Chiefs. Daniel Boone 12, Morristown East 2 MORRISTOWN — Abby Sherman went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and finished a triple shy of the cycle for Boone, which scored seven runs in the second inning. Laney Britton doubled three times and plated three times. Payton Guinn (2 doubles, 3 RBIs), Aggie Greer (double, 2 RBIs) and Lilly Hilton (double) all went 2-for-3. Emmi Croley and Brooklyn Boswell split time and combined for five strikeouts. Morristown West 2, West Ridge 0 BLOUNTVILLE — Mackenzie Lucky struck out seven and scattered four hits in her shutout win for MoWest, in addition to hitting a double. Kami Clark and Kaylee Hicks both singled for West Ridg , which got six strikeouts in a two-hit effort from Zoey Blair. Sullivan East 5, Cloudland 3 BLUFF CITY — Maddie Woods went 2-for-2 and drove in three runs for the Lady Patriots, who got a double from Audrey Easley. Piper Smith struck out 11 in her eight-hit win. Savannah McCoury doubled twice and went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for Cloudland. Jayla Harper went 2-for-3 with a double. Rye Cove 11, Castlewood 3 CLINCHPORT — Aubrey Sartin doubled twice and tripled once, batting 4-for-4 and driving in four runs for the Lady War Eagles. Gracen Chavez hit a triple and a solo home run, with Morgan Edwards and Riley Fonseca adding two hits each. Allison Akers, who doubled struck out 16 in her five-hit win. University High 26, Hampton 22 HAMPTON — Madison Luck hit 4-for-6 with four RBIs and a double to lead University High, which scored 15 runs in the fourth and outhit the Lady Bulldogs 19-12. Reece Williams (Double) and Alex Boynewicz both had three hits with Ire Adeyemi, Maddy O'Donnell and Tyla Barnett adding two hits each. Hannah Smith hit 3-for-6 with a double and three RBIs for Hampton. Hadley Vines (double) went 2-for-5. Johnson County 13, Happy Valley 3 MOUNTAIN CITY — Ezzy Barr hit a two-run bomb for the Lady Longhorns, who got two doubles from Ella Icenhour (3-for-4) and another from Karlie Fletcher (4-for-4). Clara Wilson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Barr also struck out seven in her three-hit win. Emily Miller had an RBI hit for Happy Valley. North Greene 8, Unaka 6 BAILEYTON — Eva Leonoard hit 3-for-4 to lead the Lady Huskies. Charlie Turnmire (triple) and Kinlea Eastep (double) both went 2-for-3. Kacie Bare went 2-for-3 with a home run for Unaka. Brooklyn Campbell (double) went 3-for-4, with Kelsey Pasquale and Devalynn Harter (double) adding two hits each. John S. Battle 15, Gate City 0 BRISTOL, Va. — Taylor Childress and Leah Senter combined for a five-inning no-hitter, the former striking out three over the first three innings. Maddie Bowery homered and drove in six runs, while Hannah Lockhart hit 3-for-3. BOYS SOCCER Providence Academy 1, Lakeway Christian 0 WHITE PINE — Cage Merkel scored the winning goal on a Jeremiah Moore assist as the Knights prevailed on the road against their district rivals. Austin Beckner made 10 saves in the clean sheet with more, Chris Carroll, Luke Gilmer, Kahler Oggero and Chase Ballard standing out defensively. Volunteer 8, Claiborne 0 NEW TAZEWELL — Brinley Buchanan and Colton Miller both scored two goals to help Volunteer reach the 10-win mark and finish second in the District 2-AA standings. Evan Lukens scored a goal and assisted three others, with Evan Wilder tallying one goal and one helper. Camden Lukens and Isaac Bradshaw each scored once. Ossie Franklin, who earned the clean sheet, and Conner Williams both had one assist. Elizabethton 8, Sullivan East 0 BLUFF CITY — Drake Teague connected on five goals for the Cyclones, who clinched at least a share of the District 1-AA title. Reece Vernon completed a hat trick of his own and assisted Teague once. Quincy Hall dished out two assists, with one apiece from Connor Blevins and Lleyton Neal. Tucker Taylor saved two shots in the win. University High 5, Chuckey-Doak 2 JOHNSON CITY — Cooper Booth and Danny Rojas both found the back of the net twice as the Bucs collected a district win. Cooper Onks scored University High's other goal, while Tyler DeGennaro and Caden Richards had one assist each. Cole Arnold got the win in goal, one of his saves coming on a penalty kick that would've equalized. Gate City 3, John S. Battle 0 BRISTOL, Va. — A different player accounted for each Gate City goal. Walker Hillman, Keegan Bright and Eli Reed all found the back of the net, with Brody Sivert and Max Taylor dishing out assists. Bryson Smith made three saves in his clean sheet. Tennessee High 5, West Ridge 1 BLOUNTVILLE — Five different players scored for the Vikings, Brodyn Murphy scoring one of them and assisting another. Tyler Hommel, Milan Lebe, Holden Lester and Connor Broglio all found the back of the net, and Jacob Phillips had one assist. CAK 7, Unicoi County 0 KNOXVILLE — Benny Acevedo made 15 saves for the Blue Devils against the traditional Division II power. GIRLS SOCCER Gate City 4, John S. Battle 1 BRISTOL, Va. — Madison Cox found the back of the net twice to help the Lady Blue Devils pick up another district win on the road. Aubrey Smith scored once and dished out two assists. Isabella Hartsock found the back of the net, and Avery Elam assisted one goal in addition to making one save in goal. Addison Weatherly made two stops in the combined win.
