Kingsport celebrates 40th Arbor Day with planted trees

KINGSPORT — Three new trees were planted this week at Borden Park to celebrate Kingsport's 40th Arbor Day. Community members gathered Friday to recognize the recently planted Willow Oak, Prairifire Crabapple and Sweetbay Magnolia trees. Additionally, Kingsport was acknowledged as a Tree City USA community for the 40th year in a row. "The first Arbor Day tree was planted in 1986 at the former George Washington Elementary School, and it was a ginkgo, and it is still standing there today," said Tamra Rossie, the city's manager for grounds and landscaping. Rossie said Borden Park was chosen because it is a frequently visited park and noted Arbor Day as a way to give back to the community. She said during the presentation that the trees chosen "reflect the character and natural beauty" of Kingsport. "The crabapple tree, proudly recognized as the tree of Kingsport, symbolizes the city's identity and long standing commitment to urban forestry," explained Rossie. "The Sweetbay Magnolia represents the region's native beauty and resilience, thriving in landscapes that shape the area. The Willow Oak, known for its strength and graceful form, reflects the growth and stability of the city over the past four decades." In the past, trees ranging from Red Maple to Yoshino cherry have been planted at schools, parks and other locations around the Model City. Tree City USA Kingsport Mayor Paul Montgomery read off a city-issued proclamation, recognizing April 24, 2026, as Arbor Day in Kingsport. He called 40 years in the Tree City USA program a significant achievement. To be designated as Tree City USA community, the following requirements must be met: Have a tree advisory board or department Have a tree care ordinance Have a comprehensive community forestry program Hold an annual Arbor Day celebration Surrounding cities such as Rogersville, Johnson City, Jonesborough, Morristown and Bristol have also been recognized as Tree City USA communities — with Kingsport being awarded the recognition for the most consecutive years in the region. "Trees are always important to us because, number one, they stop erosion," Montgomery said. "Number two, they provide oxygen to the air, and number three, they provide shade for all those of you in the shade enjoying the trees today." Cody Buck with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Division of Forestry presented Montgomery with a maple leaf to go on Kingsport's Tree City plaque. The National Association of State Foresters, USDA Forest Service and the Tennessee Division of Forestry also sponsor the Tree City USA program. Kingsport's Streets and Sanitation Department maintains over 12,00 trees and over 15 acres of landscaping in the city, a previous release states. The department also removed damaged or deceased trees on public lands, while providing annual upkeep of 21 park facilities and 827 of green space.
