Get to know… Ryan Bernard

I first met Ryan Bernard years ago at a late night gig. I was playing in a band with friends of his and it was quickly evident that he was one of those guys you like to be around. Good conversation, always upbeat and always interested in what was happening musically. I was happy to soon count him as a friend of mine as well. Ryan stays involved - he plays in bluegrass, rock, soul and jam bands and he does each with ease and interest, adding to the sound and the vibe and making those around him all the better for it. He stays busy and active, always up for a jam or a gig - a musician's musician. Whether teaching, playing or encouraging others, Ryan is all about making the best music possible and keeping it pure and worthwhile. If you wanted to catch him on a local stage, you'd have plenty of chances to do so. Take a few moments and get to know Ryan Bernard. When did you decide music was going to be a big part of your life, and how did you first get involved? "Probably when i picked up the guitar at the age of ten. My dad taught me chords so he could solo and it was all downhill from there. He taught me to appreciate Doc Watson, Willie and Waylon, and Jimmie Rodgers." Is your current project a first, or have you been involved in other things? "I'm involved in several different bands. I have played primarily traditional, southern Appalachian fiddle music for the past twenty or so years. Most folks call it Old time. We have a regular Old time jam at Yee-Haw Brewing in Johnson City every Tuesday at 5pm. This is our fifth year and it's a pretty successful jam. I have also been playing the Jonesborough Farmers Market since 2007 in different iterations of Old time bands, duos, etc. We have a rotating crew of musicians we pull from the Tuesday jam. I have a main Old time band called John Bills & the Academics for scheduled shows and square dances. In addition to the Old time music, I have been playing electric music as well. I am in a indie rock band called Alexis Wax, who have played for over twenty years in different iterations. I grew up with all of those guys in Kingsport. I started playing guitar with them a couple years back. I also play bass in a band called the Del Rio Trio. We are a Dead cover band in the simplest of terms and try to play tunes that crowd would enjoy." What is it about music that makes you want to perform or be involved? "Making music for others to enjoy is one of the best ways to express yourself and connect with others. Make a joyful noise unto…. Right!" How would you describe your music (band/project)? "Evolving, ha!" Is this something you see yourself doing as a career? "Not at this time. I have a day job! I'm an archivist at the Archives of Appalachia/ETSU. I also teach the American Roots Music course for the department of Appalachian Studies. Lots of banjos and fiddles!" What are your other interests? Do you have any surprise talents or hobbies? "I like to hike and swim. Our area offers so many outdoor options and I try to take advantage of those. I also collect and seek out LPs. It is pretty fun to record shop!" Who are your influences/favorites (worldwide and local)? "Coltrane, Garcia, Stanley Brothers, Doc Watson, Sonic Youth, Black Flag, the list goes on forever."
