Tipton resigns from Weber City Town Council

WEBER CITY – The ballot for November's Weber City town elections is now shorter by one candidate. Weber City Town Council members learned Tuesday that council member Wendell Tipton submitted his letter of resignation to Town Attorney Michael Carico on July 23 – two days after the council's July regular meeting – according to council member Keltie Kerney. Tipton was one of nine declared candidates for all six council seats on the November ballot. Scott County Deputy Registrar Tammy Presley confirmed Thursday that Tipton had withdrawn his candidacy on July 31 and that his name will not appear on mail-in or Election Day in-person ballots. Kerney said she and other council members were not provided with a copy of Tipton's letter. Tipton confirmed Thursday that he did resign and withdraw from the November ballot. He said he resigned because of actions taken by an unspecified official counter to actions approved by council. "Things weren't handled properly," said Tipton. The Times News reached out to Carico Wednesday and Thursday after an email requesting a copy of the letter was rejected by Carico's office email system. Kerney said she moved to have former mayor and former council member Greg W. Smith appointed to fill out Tipton's term through December. The motion failed on a 2-3 vote, with Kerney and Eileen Roberts Deckard opposed by council members Jeff Flanary, Teresa Tilson and a tiebreaker vote by Mayor Justin Addington. Council member Zackary Salyer was absent. Smith is one of eight remaining candidates on the November ballot, joined by Kerney, Deckard, Tilson, Flanary, Michael A. Kerney, Anthony J. Hass and Steve "Pee Wee" Smith. Addington is the only registered candidate for mayor in November.
