Early 9/11 commemoration in Weber City Saturday

WEBER CITY — The 9/11 attacks and sacrifices by first responders will get an advance commemoration Saturday with the first annual Weber City 9.11 Remembrance Run/Walk/Ruck fundraiser for the Weber City Volunteer Fire Department. Ashley Kilgore, co-owner of The Yard Strength and Training — the event's sponsor, said the event is designed not to conflict with other commemorations later in the week of Sept. 11 while serving to commemorate the 343 firefighters and emergency personnel who died in the World Trade Center's collapse after it was struck by two hijacked airliners a quarter-century ago. "Every year, we've done a special workout for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day," said Kilgore, "and I had the idea that this would be a way to help the community and remember the first responders who gave their life in New York on September 11." The 3.43-mile route will bass by a banner created by students at Weber City Elementary School with photos of each of the fallen personnel, Kilgore said. The event will start and end at Weber City Elementary School with three loops along Jennings, Johnson and Legion streets in town. Participants can gather at the elementary school Saturday starting at 7:30 a.m. A color guard from the Dobyns-Bennett High School Air Force JROTC program will conduct a flag ceremony at 8:55 a.m., followed by guest speaker and Tri-Cities 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb organizer Andrew Catron.
