Tennessee's $43M quantum technology grant program opens

(The Center Square) – Applications for Tennessee's $43 million Quantum Utilization Buildout Infrastructure and Technology Grant Program are being accepted until Oct. 23, according to the Department of Economic and Community Development. Funding for the program was included in Gov. Bill Lee's 2027 fiscal year budget. "Tennessee is uniquely positioned to lead the future of quantum technology because of the extraordinary assets we have across our state," Lee said in a statement. "By investing in the infrastructure needed to connect those assets, we're creating new opportunities for innovation, economic growth and high-quality jobs for Tennesseans." The program is open to public and private companies, higher education institutions, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory or public utilities, according to information posted about the grant online. "Between Oak Ridge National Laboratory, EPB's vast quantum network, leading research universities and an ever-growing technology sector, Tennessee has the foundation to become a national hub for quantum innovation," Economic and Community Development Commissioner Stuart McWhorter said in a statement. Applicants must provide a 20% cash match. For example, a project with $1 million in eligible costs must provide a $200,000 cash match and can apply for up to $800,000 in grant funds, according to online information about the grant. The grant program is part of the state's efforts to become a hub for quantum technology. Lee announced a $3 million funding commitment to attract quantum computing teams to the state in July. The program will provide National Science Foundation X-Labs quantum teams up to $3 million, workforce development, and partnerships with state industries, national laboratories, universities and utilities, the governor's office said.
