Science Hill boys, Tenn. High girls win 1-AA golf titles

BRISTOL — The Science Hill boys made themselves at home to capture the District 1-AA championship on Friday at The Golf Club of Bristol. A week earlier, Science Hill coach Kevin Vannoy had expressed concerns about keeping up with host Tennessee High on their home course. Instead, the Hilltoppers were the ones who won by a wide margin, and the Vikings were left unsure of their fate moving forward. The Hilltoppers finished 293, some 11 strokes ahead of Dobyns-Bennett at 304. Tennessee High and West Ridge were another seven strokes back. They will face off Monday in a playoff to determine which team qualifies for next Friday's Region 1-AA championships at the same course. Will Sanders was 2-under 69 on the par-71 course to finish second individually and lead the Hilltoppers to the title. Ben Vandergriff was fourth individually and finished even par at 71. Crockett Mullins posted a 3-over 74, while Avery Watts and Max Brian each shot 79. Dobyns-Bennett was led by Jake Fowler, who followed up his individual medalist at the Big 6 Conference meet by doing the same at the district. Fowler was 34 on the front and a blistering 31 on the back to finish 6-under 65 and win by four strokes. The Indians got other scores from Peyton Robinson (77), Camden Cheshier (78) and Austin Profitt (84). Beckley Davis had an 85 which didn't count towards the team total. Jayden Foster finished fifth individually with a 2-over 73 to lead West Ridge. Fletcher Henritze finished with a 76. Kale Creech with a 79 and Cooper Maness with an 83 added to the total. Bo McGee posted an 89. Tennessee High was led by Declan McSheehy with a 1-under 71 and Russell Blevins with a 3-over 75. GIRLS COMPETITION Isla Searcy was the individual medalist with a 4-over 75 to lead Tennessee High to the team title 151-159 over Dobyns-Bennett. Her Lady Vikings teammate Bella Branson was second individually with a 5-over 76. Ava Blevins shot an 84 which wasn't counted in the team scores. Dobyns-Bennett was led by Brentley Marsh with a 79 and Kennedy Burton with an 80. Emma Hammons had a round of 92 not included in the Lady Indians' score. Cassidy Mullins was the low scorer for Science Hill, which finished third at 165. Mullins carded an 80 and Rebekah Bowman was at 85. Addison Smith had an 87 with only the top two scores counted. Daniel Boone's Kara Cretsinger, who won the Big 6 individual title the previous week, finished third individually with an 8-over 79.
