Fall hiking with your dog — hitting the trail with your pup

Now that fall is on its way, it will finally be cool enough to take part in all the activities the season has to offer. Hiking is a widely loved fall outing and is a great way to view the beautiful foliage. Plenty of dog owners can attest to the fact that no one is a more eager hiking companion than your pup! Going for hikes with your dog is great way to spend time together, but it's not for every dog. The American Kennel Club offers the following tips to ensure your hike goes as smoothly as possible. KNOW YOUR BREED Depending on what breed of dog you have, the level of physical activity your pup requires can vary. A higher-energy dog breed, like an Australian Shepherd, may have an easier time on a hike than a low-energy breed. The physical capacity and exercise limits of your dog are crucial factors to consider before beginning any activity, especially what kind of hike to take. Remember you can always check in with your veterinarian RESEARCH THE LEASH RULES OF THE TRAIL Many trails require your dog to be on a leash for the duration of your hike. Even if the trail doesn't have a leash requirement, it is still a good idea to bring one with you. If need be, being able to have your dog on leash can help steer them away from poisonous plants or other animals. PACK THE ESSENTIALS Hiking can be physically demanding for both you and your dog. It is very important to have the essentials on hand to offer your dog when they need them. Bring water and a collapsible travel bowl and offer your pup a drink every half hour. Additionally, you'll want supplies should an emergency occur, like a first aid kit that contains antibiotic cream for minor cuts, roll-on bandages, and a clean bandana to use as a tourniquet in case of major bleeding or bone fractures. DON'T FORGET THE BAGGIES Always bring bags with you to clean up after your dog even if you don't think you'll be out that long. Your dog will eventually need a bathroom break, and it is best to be prepared. Always practice responsible dog ownership!
