Q&A with James Marsh, Church Hill alderman candidate

James Marsh is running for Church Hill alderman. There are three open seats for a four-year chair and seven candidates. In addition to Marsh, they are Ralph Little, Marc Bass, Ken Luster, Michael Walker, Keith Bruner and Tim Lingerfelt. Q: What inspired you to run for this position? A: I decided to run because I believe local government works best when elected officials listen to the people they represent. I want to bring my experience, ideas, and perspective to the Board help address community concerns, and work with other officials and residents on practical improvements for Church Hill. Q: What experiences have prepared or qualified you for this position? A: My work in public utilities has given me experience with responsibility, teamwork, problem-solving, and serving the public. I have spent 27 years working with infrastructure and responding to problems that affect residents. That experience has taught me the importance of listening, communicating clearly, following through, and finding practical solutions. Q: What are your top goals and priorities, if elected? A: My priorities would include improving roads and infrastructure, supporting our police and city employees, and creating more opportunities for our children and teenagers. I would like to explore a teen center, improved parks, and ballfields.I also want to work on attracting new businesses, including restaurants to Church Hill to create jobs, give residents more choices, and strengthen our local tax base.I support responsible spending, better communication, and listening to residents. Q: What do you believe are the strengths and weaknesses of your town's Board of Mayor and Aldermen? What does this governing body do well, and how could it improve? A: The Board has members who bring different experiences and perspectives, which could help with decisions for the community. I believe there is always room to improve communication, cooperation, and transparency. The Board can strengthen its connection with residents by clearly explaining decisions, listening to concerns, considering different viewpoints, and following up on issues brought before it. I would support a constructive approach focused on facts, communication, and practical solutions Q: What issues do you feel are most important to residents, and how do you plan to connect with constituents and address their concerns? A: Important issues include roads, drainage and sewer issues, public safety, and responsible spending. I plan to stay connected by speaking directly with residents, visiting neighborhoods, attending community events, and listening to concerns and ideas. I would bring those concerns to the Board, follow up on issues, and communicate what can be done. Residents should have opportunities to be heard throughout the term, not only during an election.
