Q&A with Kathryn Boggs Metcalf, Church Hill alderman candidate

Kathryn Boggs Metcalf is running for a two-year term as a Church Hill alderman. There is one open seat and three candidates. In addition to Metcalf, they are Michael Bell and Keith Gibson. Q: What inspired you to run for this position? A: As a Church Hill resident and former City Police Officer, I have a strong connection to this community. I care about the citizens and want to see our city continue to grow and improve. I am running for Alderman because I want to contribute to the community I call home. Q: What experiences have prepared or qualified you for this position? A: My five years as a Church Hill Police Officer gave me firsthand knowledge of city operations and needs. I manage businesses as a licensed Realtor, property manager and travel agent. I graduated from Bethel University with a bachelor's in criminal justice and serve on the NETAR association's Governmental Affairs Committee. Q: What are your top goals and priorities, if elected? A: My priorities are to serve the residents of Church Hill, support responsible growth and maintain a low tax rate. I want to encourage open communication, make fact-based decisions and ensure residents feel heard and represented. My goal is to work collaboratively with fellow elected officials and city staff to address community needs and make decisions that serve the best interests of Church Hill. Q: What do you believe are the strengths and weaknesses of your town's Board of Mayor and Aldermen? What does this governing body do well, and how could it improve? A: I believe the Board of Mayor and Aldermen has an important responsibility to guide the city's growth, manage resources responsibly and serve its residents. I would like to see better organization in city affairs, a more competitive pay scale for city employees, a structured schedule for street paving, improved park and pool maintenance, and upgrades to city equipment as needed. Q: What issues do you feel are most important to residents, and how do you plan to connect with constituents and address their concerns? A: I believe residents want to know their voices matter and that their concerns are taken seriously. I would like to see improved communication, including an updated city website with important information and schedules, and an online portal where residents can share issues and concerns. If elected, I will make myself available to residents, their concerns, and communicate openly. I will strive to be an accessible representative who considers the community's needs when making decisions.
