Unshakable Brewers claim first World Series title, capping magical October run

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- For more than half a century, they were all Bob Uecker, sentenced to a view from the hinterlands. If the Milwaukee Brewers squinted, maybe they could see the World Series. But when it came to contending for titles, they were never quite in the ballpark. On Wednesday, the baseball gods finally relented. The Brewers are champions for the first time in franchise history. Welcome to the front row, at last. The Brewers finished off the Tampa Bay Rays with a 4-1 victory in Game 5 of the World Series at Tropicana Field, where thousands of their fans gathered for the vacation of a lifetime. Founded in 1970 after one season as the Seattle Pilots, the Brewers captured Milwaukee's first championship since the Braves took the title in 1957.The Braves, as it turned out, were merely stopping by for a while on their journey from Boston to Atlanta. The Brewers are a Milwaukee institution now, and they won Game 5 in a most Wisconsin way: with products from the farm.Jacob Misiorowski, the homegrown ace, blanked the Rays on two hits for 5 ⅔ innings, until a right calf cramp ended his longest outing of the postseason. Brice Turang and Cooper Pratt, middle infielders drafted and developed by Milwaukee, both had two hits, with Pratt driving in two and Turang adding a stolen base.Trevor Megill, a hulking closer discarded by other teams, allowed a run in the ninth but finished the job, getting Richie Palacios to ground out to Turang, who flipped to Jake Bauers at first to start a party decades in the making. And with that, Pat Murphy's Brewers completed one of the most convincing Octobers in baseball history, going 11-2 after leading the majors with 103 victories in the regular season. The Brewers' triumph leaves only four MLB franchises without a championship: the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies -- and, alas, the Rays. How likely is another Rays run next year? Some public projection systems such as PECOTA pegged Tampa Bay to finish last in the American League East in 2026. Such predictions obviously aged quite poorly. There is a distinct possibility that the Rays will enter next season as anything but a front-runner again. The AL East is set to remain highly competitive. And the Rays' roster may again experience some turnover.Tampa Bay's position-player core featuring Junior Caminero, Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda, Chandler Simpson and Liam Hicks is capable of leading another deep postseason run, especially if they receive help somewhere. The Rays' rotation, however, might be a different story. And that's funny, considering the unit was arguably the club's biggest strength during the playoffs.Drew Rasmussen, Tampa Bay's ace, is set to make more money by reaching contract incentives to stay healthy while there is a $20 million mutual option on Nick Martinez and Freddy Peralta is slated for free agency. Ryan Pepiot and Shane McClanahan should enter next season healthy, but the latter is a trade candidate because he is entering his final year of arbitration. In order to take the Rays seriously, they must answer questions about their rotation. Tampa Bay's farm system is heavy on talented position players but lacks super-talented major-league ready pitchers. -- Will SammonHas William Contreras played his last game as a Brewer? Milwaukee's catcher isn't exactly a secret. Contreras has made three All-Star teams (including one with the Atlanta Braves) and he's still only 28 years old. But this October represented a breakout for Contreras as a tough field general, a clutch hitter and a savvy catcher with uncanny knowledge of the ABS challenge system. He's also likely to price himself out of Milwaukee's range when he hits free agency after the 2027 season. The Brewers will surely pick up Contreras' $15.5 million option for next season, and could always keep him until he hits the open market, as they did with shortstop Willy Adames in 2024.But the Brewers have won consistently by having the foresight to trade veterans at peak value, with an eye on long-term success. If president of baseball operations Matt Arnold can extract a massive haul for one year of Contreras, he might have to do it. And as hard as that would be for fans to accept, Arnold has earned the benefit of the doubt. -- Tyler KepnerWas the American League just bad?Throughout the season, it seemed whichever team emerged from the National League -- which contained four 90-plus win clubs -- would be the favorite to win the World Series. The Rays were a good team that came from a bad league; only five AL teams finished above .500.Still, the series felt more lopsided than it actually was. Most of the games were decided by just one run. Tampa Bay's roster contains a star in Caminero, strong contributors and a bunch of talented players who are good at specific jobs, but they failed to make it much of a series. Their pitching staff was on fumes and they didn't get enough timely hitting from their lineup. Throughout the season, the Rays played sound fundamentally, but they made too many mistakes early in the series. By the time they cleaned things up, it was too late. -- SammonWill the Brewers get another chance to 'win our way'?The owners want a salary cap, and the Brewers' Mark Attanasio, like his peers, believes the sport should have one. But the architects of the roster may not be as eager for change.Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold, who previously worked for the Rays, has mastered this system better than any other top executive. The Brewers have robust scouting and analytics operations, and they've been ahead of the industry in making players better through old-school coaching and modern technology.Theoretically, they could always retain those advantages. But the Brewers have little to gain if MLB standardizes some of the infrastructure advantages they've built, and they've shown they know how to craft a winning roster without being told how to do it. By spending smartly and making hard decisions, the Brewers avoid being hamstrung by major payroll commitments to players on the decline.Under Attanasio's direction, Arnold and his staff should be savvy enough to succeed in any system. But they are experts at working within this particular system, and would have little to gain if MLB overhauls the operating rules to help other small-market teams who just aren't as good at what they do. -- KepnerThis article originally appeared in The Athletic.
